Travis Bader scored 28 points and Duke Mondy added 17 with eight assists and seven boards to pace Oakland past Illinois-Chicago 86-71 on Friday night.
Bader went 4 of 6 from the perimeter and 12 of 13 from the foul line. Those four 3-pointers give him an NCAA-leading 130 on the season and pushed his NCAA all-time record to 487. He also moved into sole possession of the NCAA record for most 3-point field goal attempts in a career, now having 1,198. Former Saint Peter's standout Keydren Clark had 1,192 in his career (2002-06).
Senior Hayden Humes ripped off back-to-back threes during the Flames’ offensive spurt and finished the contest with a season-high 16 points, all in the second half. Senior Kelsey Barlow scored eight points and tied a career high with eight assists, his third-straight game with six or more helpers.
Oakland came out red-hot to start the game, connecting on 9-of-15 from downtown in the first half, including 4-of-5 from Bader. The Grizzlies shot 17-of-26 (65.4%) from the floor in the opening period compared to just 8-of-23 (34.8%) for UIC. Behind 16 points from Bader, OU held a 45-24 lead at the half.
The Grizzlies kept their foot on the throttle and held a 57-30 lead by the 15:17 in the second half. Both teams traded buckets over the next several minutes until the Flames’ 16-0 run which started at the 5:06 mark. Gabe Snider began the surge with a triple and was followed by a three from Marc Brown. After Barlow sank a free throw, Humes scored eight straight points and had pulled UIC to within nine. Jake Wiegand cut the lead to 72-64 after a made foul shot with 2:35 on the clock, but Bader gave Oakland a 10-point edge after a pair of free throws. The Flames cut the lead back down to eight on two separate occasions in the next 52 seconds, but the Grizzlies closed out the night on an 8-2 run for the win.
UIC out-rebounded Oakland on the offensive glass by a margin of 15-7, and scored 20 second-chance points. Wiegand pulled down five of those offensive rebounds as he corralled a team-high nine boards.
Wright State 65, Detroit 61
A 16-4 second-half run gave the Wright State men's basketball team a lead they would not lose as the Raiders held on down the stretch for a 65-61 Horizon League win over Detroit Friday night at WSU's Nutter Center.
Detroit (13-16, 6-8 HL) led 37-35 with 15:18 left, before Wright State (16-13, 8-6 HL) put together a 12-2 run, led by eight-straight points from Matt Vest to build a 47-39 lead with 10:37 left. The Titans trimmed the lead to four, 59-55, with 2:09 left and had three defensive stops but couldn't capitalize on them as the Raiders made some key free throws down the stretch to secure fourth place in the Horizon League.
Detroit opened the game with a 10-4 run during the first six minutes of action and held the Raiders without made field goal for the first eight minutes until Reggie Arceneaux made a three-pointer to trim the Titans lead to 12-9 with 11:15 left. Detroit then went on a 13-7 run to build its largest lead of the game 25-16 with 5:37 remaining. But Wright State was able to take advantage of some Titan turnovers and closed the half with a 13-5 run to make the score 30-29 during intermission. Howard led Detroit with eight points in the opening stanza, while Arceneaux had nine - on three trifectas - to lead the Raiders.
The Raiders shot 45 percent in the second half to finish at 40 percent overall, includng eight of 18 three-pointers, while the Titans shot just 32 percent after halftime to end up at 39 percent, just three of 14 from three. WSU hit 19 of 25 foul shots while Detroit was 14 of 18.
Pacher led Wright State with 19 points while Vest had 11 of his 16 points in the second half. Arceneaux chipped in 15 points off the bench.
Bruinsma finished with a game-high 19 points and 12 rebounds, while his co-captain teammate Juwan Howard, Jr. added 16 points and eight rebounds.
