INDIANAPOLIS -- Oakland junior guard Kay Felder (Detroit, Mich./Pershing) has been named the Horizon League Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, while Detroit freshman guard Josh McFolley (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Western) has been named the Horizon League Freshman of the Week.
Felder opened the season with back-to-back double-double performances to earn Player of the Week honors. On Wednesday night in Oakland’s season-opener, Felder led all scorers with 27 points and also passed out 12 assists as the Golden Grizzlies defeated Eastern Michigan, 91-81. The junior guard added two steals in the win and had just one turnover.
On Sunday, Felder again led all scorers with 23 points and handed out 10 assists in the Golden Grizzlies 95-89 loss at Colorado State.
Ten days into the regular season, Felder leads all Horizon League players in points per game (25.0) and assists per game (11.0), while ranking second in free throw percentage (94.7; 18-of-19) and third in assist:turnover ratio (3.7).
Oakland (1-1) stays on the road this week with a game on Tuesday at Southern Illinois and then playing two games in Corpus Christi, Texas.
McFolley was named Freshman of the Week after leading the Titans with 17 points in his collegiate debut. He became the first freshman to lead Detroit in scoring in the first game of the season since 1978. He shot 7-of-13 from the field, knocking down three three-pointers. He added one assist, one rebound and one steal in the game. On Friday night at Pittsburgh, he scored eight points and had one rebound and one assist.
Detroit (1-1) is back in action on Monday when it hosts UM-Dearborn. The Titans end the week with a game on Saturday afternoon at Oral Roberts.
Top Performers for the Week:
Grant Benzinger, Wright State (So., G) - Benzinger scored a team-high 19 points in WSU’s loss at second-ranked Kentucky on Friday. He shot 3-of-6 from long distance and hit 8-of-9 from the foul line. He added four rebounds.
Demonte Flannigan, Cleveland State (Jr., F) - Flannigan notched his first career double-double with career-highs in points (22) and rebounds (17) in CSU’s win over Malone on Tuesday. He shot 9-of-12 from the field and added two blocked shots.
Lavone Holland, Northern Kentucky (So., G) - Holland fell one assist shy of recording a triple-double in NKU’s home-opener versus Tiffin. He finished the game with 10 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists to record his first career double-double.
Carrington Love, Green Bay (Sr., G) - Love averaged 17.0 points, 3.0 assists and 3.0 steals in three games for the Phoenix last week. He scored 22 points against ETSU and in GB’s home-opening win over Minnesota-Duluth.
Cameron Morse, Youngstown State (So., G) - Morse posted his first two 20-point performances of his career last week. He scored 23 points against Toledo and then had a career-high 28 at FGCU on Saturday. For the week, he averaged 20.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.3 steals and 2.0 assists per game in three contests.
Tai Odiase, UIC (So., C) - Odiase led the Flames in scoring and rebounding in UIC’s game at Western Illinois on Tuesday. He finished with 16 points and eight rebounds as he sank a career-high eight free throws.
Alec Peters, Valparaiso (Jr., F) - Peters scored in double figures in all four games last week for the Crusaders. He came up big at the end of Valpo’s game at Rhode Island, connecting on a three-pointer and making two free throws in the final seconds to help lead VU to a 58-55 win. For the week, he shot 51.4% (19-37) from the field as he scored 55 points.
Matt Tiby, Milwaukee (Sr., F) - Tiby recorded a double-double in both UWM games last week. He had 16 points, 13 rebounds and three assists in the Panthers’ eight-point loss at 18th-ranked Notre Dame on Tuesday. On Friday, he recorded 14 points, 13 rebounds and five assists in UWM’s home-opening win over Trinity International.
Anton Wilson, Detroit (Sr., G) - Wilson led Detroit with 20 points on Friday night at Pittsburgh. It was the third career 20-point game for Wilson. He started the year with 13 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals in the win over Central State.
Top Freshmen for the Week:
Dikembe Dixson, UIC (Fr., F) - Dixson scored 11 points, pulled down four rebounds and had a blocked shot in 33 minutes of action at Western Illinois.
Rob Edwards, Cleveland State (Fr., G) - Edwards led the Vikings with 16 points in their loss at Rhode Island on Saturday. He connected on 6-of-12 field goal attempts and added five rebounds and three assists.
Brock Stull, Milwaukee (Fr., G) - Stull put up season highs of five points, four rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals in a victory over Trinity International.
