INDIANAPOLIS -- Oakland senior center Corey Petros (Macomb, Mich./Utica Eisenhower) has been named the Horizon League Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, while his teammate freshman forward Jalen Hayes (Lansing, Mich./Sexton) has been named the Freshman of the Week, for the week of Feb. 2-8.

Petros captured his first Player of the Week award this season after scoring 50 points and grabbing 24 rebounds in two games for Oakland last week. He opened the week with a career-high 34 points in Oakland’s 91-77 win at UIC. He also set a career-mark with 15 made field goals in the contest as he shot 15-of-22 from the field. The 34 points tied for the most by a Horizon League player in a game this season. Petros added 13 rebounds in the game for his seventh double-double of the season.

On Sunday, Petros scored 16 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for his League-leading eighth double-double of the season. He matched his career-high with eight offensive rebounds in the contest. During the game, Petros went over 1,000 career rebounds and became just the third active player in the NCAA with 1,000 career points (1,530) and 1,000 career rebounds (1,008).

For the week, Petros averaged League-bests in scoring (25.0 ppg.) and rebounding (12.0 rpg.), while shooting 62.9% from the field.

Hayes won Freshman of the Week honors for the second consecutive week and fifth time this season after two stellar performances for the Golden Grizzlies. He tallied the first double-double of his career with 16 points and a career-best 10 assists in Oakland’s win at UIC on Wednesday. He added three steals in the win. On Sunday, Hayes scored 21 points, grabbed six rebounds and had four steals as Oakland fell at Valpo, 82-76. Hayes entered the game 0-for-3 from long distance on the season, but knocked down all three of his three-point attempts in the second half.

For the week, Hayes averaged 18.5 ppg., 5.5 apg., 4.5 rpg., and 3.5 spg., while playing 76 of a possible 80 minutes.

Top Performers for the Week:
Paris Burns, UIC
(Jr., G) - Burns averaged 19.0 ppg., and 7.0 apg., last week for the Flames. He scored 20 points and dished out a career-high nine assists versus Oakland on Wednesday night. He scored 18 points in the win at Detroit on Sunday. For the week, he shot 14-of-25 from the field.
Anton Grady, Cleveland State (Sr., F) - Grady averaged 19.5 ppg., and 8.5 rpg., in two CSU wins last week. He tallied his sixth double-double in League play on Wednesday night with 17 points and 13 rebounds in the win over Youngstown State. He scored 22 points and had four rebounds in the win over Wright State on Saturday.
Bobby Hain, Youngstown State (Jr., F) - Hain averaged 19 points and 7.5 rebounds per game while shooting 53.6 percent from the field last week. He also connected on 72.7 percent of his free-throw attempts. Against Oakland, Hain tied a career high with 26 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the field. He just missed his eighth double-double of the season with nine rebounds against the Golden Grizzlies. Hain also scored 12 points against Cleveland State. He has 955 career points and needs 45 more to become the 36th player in YSU history to score 1,000 career points.
Michael Karena, Wright State (Jr., C) - Karena averaged 15.0 ppg., in two games for the Raiders last week, while connecting on 86.7% (13-of-15) of his field goal attempts. He had 17 points on 7-for-7 shooting and added eight rebounds vs. Green Bay on Monday. He had 13 points and five rebounds at Cleveland State on Saturday.
Alfonzo McKinnie, Green Bay (Sr., F) - McKinnie posted a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds in the win over Milwaukee. He added 10 points in the win over Wright State on Monday. For the week, he made 13-of-23 shots.
Alec Peters, Valparaiso (So., F) - Peters posted his third double-double of the season in the win over Detroit, finishing with 12 points and 10 rebounds. He also matched his season-high with four assists in the contest. He scored 11 points on four field goal attempts in the win over Oakland on Sunday. He hit a three-pointer in the closing minutes to push Valpo’s lead to six.
Matt Tiby, Milwaukee (Jr., F) - Tiby ran his streak of consecutive games with 10 or more points to 15 by posting a career-high-tying 22 points, and grabbing 12 rebounds, in Milwaukee’s 81-70 loss at Green Bay on Thursday. Tiby’s string of 15 straight double-digit-scoring games is the longest by a Panther since Joah Tucker in 2005-06 (27 games),

Top Freshmen for the Week:
Paris Bass, Detroit (Fr., G/F) - Bass averaged 13.0 ppg., 3.5 rpg. and 2.0 spg for the Titans last week. Bass scored 14 points and grabbed five rebounds on Wednesday at Valpo, before closing the week with 12 points (5-9 FGs) and three steals versus UIC.
Grant Benzinger, Wright State (Fr., G) - Benzinger played a career-high 37 minutes, scoring 13 points at Cleveland State on Saturday. He shot 5-for-8 from the field against the Vikings, including 3-of-6 from long distance.
Daeshon Francis, Green Bay (Fr., G) - Francis made all nine of his field goal attempts last week for the Phoenix. He was 7-for-7 against Wright State, scoring a career-high 14 points in the win. He added six points in the win over Milwaukee on Thursday.
Tevonn Walker, Valparaiso (Fr., G) - Walker averaged 15.5 ppg., and 2.5 apg., in two games last week for the Crusaders. He scored 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting in the win over Detroit on Wednesday. He added 12 points, three assists and two steals in the win over Oakland on Sunday.
