INDIANAPOLIS -- Detroit forward Shareta Brown has been named the Horizon League women’s basketball Player of the Week, while Youngstown State guard Shar’Rae Davis has been named the Newcomer of the Week.
Brown, who shared the weekly award with Brandi Brown of Youngstown State on Nov. 19, posted double-doubles in both Titans games last week in helping Detroit to two wins. She started the week with a career-high 35 points, shooting 12-of-18 from the field and 11-of-14 from the foul line, while also pulling down 11 rebounds in Detroit’s 97-57 win at Western Michigan. On Sunday, the Pontiac, Mich., native tallied 19 points and tied her season-high with 15 rebounds. She also had a season-high six assists in guiding Detroit to a 65-53 win over Ohio on the road.
Brown, who was a First-Team All-League member and Co-Newcomer of the Year last season, has gotten off to a fast start in her sophomore campaign. She currently leads the Horizon League in scoring, averaging 23.6 points per game and field goal percentage (.563). Brown also ranks third in the league in rebounding at 10.3 per game.
Davis won the Newcomer award for the second time this season after winning the first award of the season on Nov. 12. On Friday, Davis posted a career-high 10 assists - the most by a Horizon League player this season - along with six points and seven rebounds in Youngstown State’s 76-43 win over Stony Brook. Earlier in the week, Davis had 11 points and five assists in the Penguins last season loss to Northern Kentucky.
Davis is leading the League in assists with 32 in six games (5.3) and has a 1.7 assist-turnover ratio (32-19) to rank third in the conference.
Top Performers for the Week:
Shalonda Winton, Cleveland State (Sr., F) - Winton posted her fifth double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 rebounds in CSU’s win over VCU. She followed up that performance with 23 points - her sixth 20+-point game of the season - and a career-high nine assists in the Vikings 69-58 win over Indiana on the road.
Adrian Ritchie, Green Bay (Sr., G) - Ritchie had with 16 points, seven assists, six steals and four rebounds in GB’s win over Indianapolis on Friday. During the contest, Ritchie scored her 1,000th point to become the 30th member of Green Bay’s 1,000 point club.
Brandi Brown, Youngstown State (Sr., F) - Brown posted her fifth straight double-double with 21 points and 15 rebounds versus Northern Kentucky. She also had 13 points and three steals in YSU’s 74-43 win over Stony Brook.
Monica Albano, Loyola (Sr., G) - Albano came off the bench to led the Ramblers with 20 points in LU’s loss at Northern Illinois on Friday. She was 7-of-10 from the field, including 5-of-8 from three-point range.
Tabitha Gerardot, Valparaiso (Jr., F) - Gerardot had 10 points and five rebounds in Valpo’s game at Western Illinois and 12 points and nine rebounds (seven offensive) versus Saint Louis.
Ivory James, Wright State (Jr., G) - James had a career-high 22 points - shooting 50.0 percent from the field - and also had four rebounds and three blocked shots in the Raiders’ game against #23/22 Dayton.
Rachel Story, UIC (Jr., G) - Story led the Flames with 24 points, knocking down four three-pointers, in UIC’s loss at SEMO on Saturday.
Top Newcomers for the Week:
Rosanna Reynolds, Detroit (Fr., G) - Reynolds had four points, four assists and three steals in Detroit’s 40-point win over Western Michigan on Wednesday. She had 14 points in UDM’s road win at Ohio on Sunday.
