INDIANAPOLIS -- Valparaiso forward Tabitha Gerardot has been named the Horizon League women’s basketball Player of the Week, while Loyola guard Taylor Johnson has been named the Newcomer of the Week.
Gerardot won Player of the Week after recording double-doubles in both Valpo games last week. The junior forward started the week with 18 points and 10 rebounds in the Crusaders last second 67-66 loss to Wright State on Thursday. During the contest, Gerardot became the 13th Valpo player to score 1,000 points in their career. On Saturday, Gerardot had 32 points and a career-high 19 rebounds in Valparaiso’s 92-84 overtime victory over Cleveland State. Gerardot scored 21 of her points after halftime, including 11 of Valpo’s 17 points in overtime. She finished the game 12-25 from the field and grabbed eight of her 19 rebounds on the offensive end.
Valparaiso (8-12, 3-4) is next in action on Saturday when it goes on the road to play at Detroit (12-7, 5-2).
Johnson won Newcomer of the Week after stuffing the stat sheet in Loyola’s come-from-behind win at Milwaukee on Thursday. Johnson finished with 33 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists and five steals in the Ramblers 84-74 win over the Panthers. She was 13-25 from the field and scored nine of her 33 points in the final 4:14 of the game as Loyola erased an eight-point deficit and ended the game on a 15-0 run.
Loyola (7-12, 2-4) has two home games this week, hosting Green Bay (17-2, 7-0) on Thursday and Cleveland State (10-10, 2-5) on Saturday.
Top Performers for the Week:
Lydia Bauer, Green Bay(Sr., F) - Bauer scored 23 points on 10-15 shooting in Green Bay’s 99-53 win over UIC on Saturday and she had 11 points and eight rebounds in the Phoenix win last Monday.
Yar Shayok, Detroit(Sr., F) - Shayok tallied a season-high 22 points on 10-14 shooting in Detroit’s win over Cleveland State on Thursday. She also had nine rebounds, four assists and four steals in the win over the Vikings. She posted 12 points and eight rebounds in UDM’s win over Milwaukee on Saturday.
Brandi Brown, Youngstown State(Sr., F) - Brown recorded a pair of double-doubles in two YSU wins last week. She had 20 points and 10 rebounds in the Penguins win at UIC on Thursday and 16 points and 10 rebounds in YSU’s win at Wright State on Sunday.
Kiersten Green, Cleveland State(So., G) - Green scored a career-high 25 points in Cleveland State’s loss at Detroit on Thursday. She had 4-5 from three-point range in the contest. She also had 18 points at Valparaiso on Saturday and tied her career-high with five steals.
Sami Tucker, Milwaukee(Sr., F) - Tucker posted back-to-back double-doubles for UWM last week. She had 18 points and tied her career-high with 14 rebounds against Detroit and had 16 points and 13 rebounds versus Loyola.
Top Newcomers for the Week:
Karen Flagg, Youngstown State(Jr., F) - Flagg averaged 7.5 ppg., 5.5 rpg., and 3.0 apg. in YSU’s two wins last week. She had eight points and career-highs in rebounds (11) and blocks (3) in the win over Wright State on Sunday.
Rosanna Reynolds, Detroit(Fr., G) - Reynolds passed out 15 assists in two UDM victories last week. She had a career-high nine in the win over Cleveland State on Thursday and six in the Titans win at Milwaukee on Saturday. She scored six points in both games as well.
Charae Richardson, Valparaiso(Jr., G) - Richardson scored 14 points and passed out a career-high six assists in the Crusaders win over Milwaukee on Thursday.
