Detroit 2, Canisius 1
Senior Kaitlyn Quarrell of the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team scored two goals including the golden goal with 2:56 left in double overtime that helped the Titans win a 2-1 decision over the Canisius Golden Griffins from the Demske Sports Complex Friday evening.

Detroit (2-2-1) won its second straight game and its second straight in overtime after a 1-0 overtime win at San Francisco on Sunday. Detroit is now 2-0 all-time against the Golden Griffins (1-4-1).

"We won the game and I thought we deserved to win the game based on how we played but the bottom line is we need to do a better job of finishing in the final third of the field and capitalizing on some of the opportunities we create," said UDM women's soccer head coach Mike Lupenec.

Quarrell started the scoring at the 4:05 mark of the first half. Quarrell made a move on the defender just inside the 18-yard box on the left side and took a shot that found the back of the net to give UDM a 1-0 lead.

Canisius would come back to tie the game in the 31st minute and the score would remain the same until Quarrell tallied the golden goal at 107:04 that won the game for the Titans. Quarrell took a pass from Riley and put the ball in the back of the net.

"It was great to see Kate get on the score sheet and this is a good win to take into playing a top ten team on Sunday," added Lupenec.

UDM had control of possession throughout the duration of the game and had more than a few great chances coming ever so close to taking the lead in regulation and then again in overtime but Canisius goalkeeper Megan Tock made 15 saves, and the team had one sav also, thwarting the Titans time and time again. Quarrell finished with 14 shots for Detroit, eight on goal, as she helped her team to 34 overall shots compared to 17 for Canisius.

Youngstown State 1, Akron 1
Sophomore Nicolette Merlo scored her first career with just 11:09 left in regulation and the Youngstown State women's soccer team salvaged a 1-1 double overtime tie against Akron, Friday, at Farmers National Bank Field.

With the tie, the Penguins move to 1-3-1 overall and the Zips move to 2-1-2 overall.

Akron's Lani Smith put the Zips ahead 1-0 in the 16th minute from an assist from Sarah Sivic.

Althought the Penguins had just as many total shots as the Zips, 6-6, and took more shots on goal, 3-2, in the first half, the Penguins were shutout in the first 45 minutes of play.

The Zips continue to pressure the Penguins' defense with eight second-half shots and three shots on goal, but YSU goalkeeper Jackie Podolsky staved off each attempt. Podolsky finished the game with five saves.

At the 78:51 mark, Merlo drilled a rebound from 20-yards out past Akron's Klaire Adee to knot the game at 1-1 and force overtime.

Merlo's goal energized the Penguins in the first extra period as the Penguins hammered three close range shots in the first six minutes, but could not capitalize. Chelsey Haney's blast at the 91:35 was blocked; Kathy Baquero's shot at the 94:26 mark was saved by Adee; and Karlee Kline's shot from the left wing with at 96:19 sailed just wide right.

DePaul 1, Milwaukee 0
Elise Wyatt sprung free just before the half and scored what proved to be the game winner, giving DePaul University a 1-0 win over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team Friday afternoon from Wish Field.

Despite being outshot 14-9, Milwaukee (0-5-0) created the majority of dangerous chances on the game, but just could not find the finishing touch.

"DePaul had a game plan in mind and they went with it and they rewarded themselves with their game plan. Credit to them for finding a positive result today," Milwaukee head coach Greg Henschel said. "We had a game plan in mind and really only attempted to engage it in the second half. It was unfortunate."

UWM did have a pair of scoring opportunities in the first half. Amy Kauffung split two DPU (4-1-0) defenders in the corner and carried the ball down the end line but her cross just missed a lunging Kelly Lewers. A few minutes later, Kelsey Holbert got a shot off inside the box but a sliding Alejandria Godinez pushed the ball just wide.

DePaul got on the board just before the break. A turnover by Milwaukee right near midfield and the Blue Demons quickly played the ball to forward Elise Wyatt who collected the ball at midfield and sprinted at the Milwaukee goal. Keeper Paige Lincicum came out to cut down the angle but Wyatt netted her fourth of the year on a shot from just outside the box five minutes before the half.

"I feel that we didn't have enough dangerous chances," Henschel said. "There were too many moments of breakdown in the first half and then in the second half, swimming upstream just isn't something easy to do. We just didn't create enough of those dangerous chances today."

Milwaukee did generate five shots in the second half, forcing the DPU keeper to make two of her three saves after the break.

The Panther's nearly found their equalizer in the 63rd minute. Kauffung again got behind the defense in the box and went straight at goal from the right side. Maria Stephans was streaking toward the far post but Kauffung's cross was snuffed out by Godinez as she made a diving save to extinguish the chance.

"That's a thing that this group has is a lot of fight and I think they're demonstrating that," Henschel said. "We've got to fight through moments of complacence and stay urgent at all moments. It was good to see that."

Indiana State 4, Green Bay 0
Three second-half goals helped lift host Indiana State over the Green Bay women’s soccer team, as the Sycamores ran away with a 4-0 triumph on Friday evening at Memorial Stadium.

With the win, the Sycamores improved to 2-2-0 on the season, while the Phoenix dropped to 2-2-1.

"It was a bad night at the office," said head coach Trevor Warren. "We didn't play well and Indiana State was able to take advantage of the chances they created and put them away.

"It was a disappointing night against a good program, but we will rebound and look to turn it around on Sunday at Drake."

Setting the tempo for the match early, Indiana State took control as it outshot Green Bay, 7-4, including 5-1 in shots on goal in the first half. Netting the lone goal of the opening stanza in the 24th minute, Sycamore forward Taylor Reed headed a corner kick from Kayla Welch to put the squad up, 1-0.

Adding her second goal of the match in the 57th minute, Taylor Reed settled a pass from Kate Johnson to push the advantage to 2-0. The Sycamores put two quick tallies on the board in the 61st and 65th minutes from Abby Reed and Sydney Lovelace, respectively, for the final 4-0 margin.

A strong offensive performance was supported by a suffocating Sycamore defense that allowed nine shots by the Phoenix for the match, including just one shot in the second half until the 77th minute. Green Bay looked poised to strike at that point as consecutive shots by Abby Juzwik (Madison, Wis.), Chandra Eigenberger (Green Bay, Wis.) and Rhiana Stelter (Waukesha, Wis.) forced Indiana State keeper Abby Keller into save situations.

For the match the Phoenix owned a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks, while Indiana State led in shots, 12-9. Nastacia Behle (St. Paul, Mo.) played the entirety, recording three saves.

Miami (Fla.) 6, Cleveland State 1
Shea Levi scored a goal just before halftime to bring Cleveland State within 2-1 of Miami (Fla.), but the Hurricanes used four second half goals to claim a 6-1 victory over the Vikings on Friday night.

CSU slipped to 2-3 this season, while Miami improved to 4-0.

The Hurricanes scored 18 minutes into the contest when Ashley Flinn tallied an unassisted goal from the left side. Flinn added her second goal of the contest at the 31:25 mark to make it 2-0 when she tapped in a cross from Tara Schwitter.

Levi sliced the CSU deficit in half with her first goal of the season with just over two mintues to play in the half, but Miam would add four second half goals in earning the win. Flinn scored the second goal of the half to notch a hat trick.

Goalkeeper Sarah Wood faced 22 shots and made 12 saves, her second game of double-digit saves this season. It also improved her season total to 46 saves through five matches.
