WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Cleveland State and UIC advanced to the semifinals of the Horizon League Men’s Tennis Championship on Friday afternoon at the Schwartz Tennis Center.
Both matches came down the stretch, with three-set victories clinching both results.
UIC jumped on Youngstown State early, grabbing the doubles point with a pair of 6-1 victories at No. 1 and No. 3.
The Flames built a 2-0 lead early in singles play, as Carl Hedstrom collected a 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles. However, Silviu Mistreanu and Dawoud Kabli tied the match with victories in consecutive order at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively.
Isaac Lloveras then knocked off Remi Chancerel, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, at No. 1 singles, pushing the Flames within a victory of advancing.
Hugo Morth rallied for a 5-7, 7-6(1), 6-0 win at No. 2, bringing Youngstown State even and sending all eyes down to court 12, where YSU’s Victor Pereira and UIC’s Max Cederkall were locked in a battle of forehands.
Pereira had the early lead in the match, winning the first set, 6-2, before Cederkall evened the match with a 7-6 second set victory. Cederkall opened a 5-3 lead in the third before Pereira took the next game on his serve. However, he was assessed a delay penalty – YSU’s second penalty of the match. As a result, a game penalty was assessed, ending the match for Cedarkill in UIC’s favor.
On the north courts, Cleveland State fended off an early rally from Detroit in singles to advance to the semifinals. Behind a pair of 6-4 wins at Nos. 1 and 3, the Vikings collected the doubles point.
At No. 3 singles, Manuel Bellutti rolled to a 6-3, 6-3 win to push Cleveland State’s lead to 2-0.
A win by Patryck Koscielski cut Detroit’s deficit in half after his 6-4, 7-5 victory at No. 1 singles, but Colton Buffington put Cleveland State in the driver’s seat by rallying for a 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 6.
Kacper Stelmaszak pulled the Titans within a point with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 triumph at No. 4, and as it looked like Nathan Ponton was going to close a three-set win to tie the match, freshman Mirko Radosevic finished a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 5.
