INDIANAPOLIS -- All suffering disappoint losses on Friday, Milwaukee, UIC and Detroit rebounded with victories on Sunday afternoon. Meanwhile, Green Bay, which won its opener, dropped a tight match at home.
Milwaukee 2, Northern Kentucky 1
Milwaukee handed head coach Kris Kelderman his first win at the helm of the Panthers, scoring two second-half goals to best visiting Northern Kentucky, 2-1.
Laurie Bell’s penalty kick broke a 1-1 tie in the 76th minute and helped Milwaukee (1-1-0) rebound from a heartbreaking defeat on Friday.
Trailing, 1-0, at intermission, UWM came out attacking the entire second half, pushing the shot total to 23-to-4 in the game with a 15-to-2 edge in the second. Bell nearly scored in the 57th minute, but earned a corner kick in the process, leading to Declan Rodriguez’s equalizing on a header at the 58:23 mark off Zach Stevenson’ corner.
The Panthers took the lead for good after the Norse were whistled for a handball inside the 18-yard-box. Bell stepped up and drilled the penalty kick opportunity, tallying his first goal of the year for the eventual game-winner with the clock reading 76:00.
On the day, the Panthers also earned eight of the nine corner kicks in addition to the decisive advantage in shots.
UIC 2, Ohio State 0
UIC rebounded from a disappointing loss to open the year to shutout Ohio State, 2-0, at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus.
UIC (1-1-0) wasted no time in opening a lead against the Buckeyes, as Ned Pavlovic drilled the eventual game-winning goal just six minutes into the match. Jesus Torres raced down the right side and played a cross to Kyle Lindberg. Lindberg’s touch to Jorge Alvarez then came to Pavlovic, who converted the goal.
Keeper Piotr Kikolski would make the goal stand up, making five of his eight saves in the first half.
2011 Horizon League Offensive Player of the Year Ivan Stanisavljevic would seal the result in the 83rd minute, capitalizing on another advantage in the counter attack. The unassisted tally pushed his season point total to three (one goal, one assist) through two matches.
Detroit 3, IPFW 0
Detroit found the back of the net often in its home opener, racing past IPFW, 3-0, at Titan Field.
Pat Lepera keyed the attack for Detroit (1-1-0), scoring the game-winning and last goal of the match. The senior scored the Titans first goal of the year off a feed from Jeremy Stoychoff dropped a pass to Lepera at the top of the box; Lepera’s drive to the right side beat the keeper and gave Detroit a 1-0 advantage just six minutes into the match.
Just over a minute into the second half, Detroit would add to its lead, as Kevin Pinkos converted a cross from Jacob Prud’home. Lepera would close the scoring in the 77th minute, picking up a loose ball in the box and bury it in the back of the net.
Marquette 1, Green Bay 0
Eric Pothast’s goal in the 30th minute was enough to send Marquette past Green Bay at Aldo Santaga Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Green Bay (1-1-0) put just one shot on goal in the match, while Phoenix keeper Ryan Wehking came up with seven saves to keep Green Bay in the contest.
Shortly after Pothast’s goal, Ahmad Bah nearly tied the match, but narrowly skirted to the left of the post. Whitney Browne also missed to the left of the goal with 29:09 to play in the first half.
Green Bay had six shots in the second half but its closest look at the goal came with 37:51 to play when Bah broke free on the left side of the field and fired a shot over his defender only to hit the cross bar.
