INDIANAPOLIS -- Loyola’s Gina Valgoi (Detroit, Mich.) and Candice Carajohn (Seneca, Ill.) have been named the Horizon League Women’s Track and Field Athletes of the Week for the week of April 2 - April 8. This is the second time this season the duo has swept the female awards.
Valgoi made Loyola history on Saturday when she competed in the 10,000-meter run at the Stanford Invite. She broke All-American Leigh Anne Renk’s school record with a time of 33:51.81. Renk’s record of 34:26.10 had stood since 1992. The time is also a provisional qualifying mark and currently ranks 21st in the country. In addition, Valgoi’s time is a solid two-plus minutes faster than her Horizon League competitors.
Carajohn competed at the Chicagoland Championships where she finished first in both the long jump and triple jump out of more than 20 competitors. The junior set new school records in both events with leaps of 6.08m (long jump) and 12.15m (triple jump). Carajohn bettered her own school record in the long jump (previously 5.35m) and topped Michelle Bellford’s 2004 mark (11.91m) in the triple jump.
Loyola will be back in action this weekend when it travels to the University of Missouri for the Tom Botts Invitational.
