INDIANAPOLIS -- Valparaiso junior Jordan Aidoud (Lyon, France) is the Horizon League Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week while Oakland senior Cody Archibald (Marine City, Mich.) is the Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 6-12.
Valparaiso (7-2-3, 2-1-0) took the pitch this past week on the road at IUPUI and at home versus conference opponent Wright State. The Crusaders exploded offensively in the two games, tallying eight goals in the contests. The squad defeated the Jaguars, 3-1, on Tuesday night and the Raiders Friday night, 5-2. Valparaiso is currently third place in Horizon League standings after three League matches.
In the mid-week game against IUPUI, Aidoud was a catalyst to the offense 15 minutes into the first half. The junior was tackled in the box by a Jaguar defender and netted a penalty kick in the top right-hand corner to put the Crusaders on the scoreboard. Three days later at home taking on Wright State, Aidoud led the second half comeback for Valparaiso after falling behind two goals to the Raiders. In the second-straight game, the junior netted a penalty kick on the right side of the goal to cut the lead within one. In the 77th minute, a free kick for the Crusaders served as another goal-scoring opportunity for Aidoud as he found the back of the net off of a pass from teammate Nick Suker. In addition to netting his second and third goals of the season, the junior also assisted the fifth goal of the match for Valparaiso. He currently is tied for the team lead in goals and leads the team with 10 points, seven of which he collected this past week.
Oakland (4-5-1, 3-0-1) had an impressive week of matches taking on Ohio State at home and Cleveland State on the road. In their mid-week game versus the Buckeyes, the Golden Grizzlies upset the Big Ten squad, 1-0, after Joey Tinnion scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 22nd minute and the team held on the remainder of the game for the shutout. Just days later, Oakland took the outright lead in the Horizon League standings when it defeated Cleveland State, 1-0, at Krenzler Soccer Field.
Archibald played the pivotal role on the backline for Oakland in the two shutout matches. The senior leads the Golden Grizzlies’ defense that has not allowed a goal in over 309 minutes, dating back to October 1st. Versus the Vikings, Archibald also headed the corner kick that forced a Cleveland State own goal in the victory.
The Crusaders continue League action Wednesday, October 15 against Detroit. Kick off for the match is set for 8:30 p.m. ET and will be streamed on the Horizon League Network. Oakland also takes the pitch Wednesday to face Milwaukee on the road, first kick is set for 8:00 p.m. ET.
