Valpo's Kowalczyk and WSU's Timm Named to Baseball's Capital One Academic All-District Team

Valparaiso's Karch Kowalczyk and Wright State's Michael Timm were named to the Capital One Academic All-District Baseball Team on Thursday afternoon.

Kowalczyk owns a 3.49 grade point average and is majoring in biology and chemistry. On the field, he has amassed team highs in doubles (8), home runs (4), and runs batted in (27) this season. In addition to his intimidating presence at the plate, the senior has saved eight games and tallied a 2.45 earned run average on the hill for the Crusaders.

His 21 career saves rank second in Valparaiso University history. He owns a 2.00 lifetime ERA in 54 innings with the Brown and Gold and opponents have batted just .194 against the right-hander.

Timm has a 3.88 grade point average in finance and currently leads the Raiders with a .338 batting average, 53 hits, 31 runs scored, three home runs and 29 RBI.  He also paces the squad with a .465 slugging percentage, 24 walks and a .451 on-base percentage.

Named to the baseball Horizon League All-Academic All-Horizon Team in 2013, Timm was the league's Male Scholar-Athlete of the Month in May of last season.  Off the field, he is the treasurer on WSU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

The Academic All-America program honors male and female student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA, a 2,000 member organization consisting of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached at least sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
