Welchlin, Dow Named Swimmers of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS -- Milwaukee’s Nathan Welchlin and Youngstown State’s Ashley Dow are the Horizon League Men’s and Women’s Swimmers of the Week for Jan. 14-20.

Welchlin, a senior from Overland Park, Kan., won all four individual events he participated in in UWM’s two dual-meets last week. In Milwaukee’s narrow loss to Northwestern on Jan. 16, Welchlin won the 100-fly (:50.02) and the 200-fly (1:50.04) to pace the Panther effort. Welchlin’s time in the 200-butterfly set a Klotsche Natatorium pool record. In Milwaukee’s dual-meet win over University of Chicago on Saturday, Welchlin won the 200-fly (1:50.36) again and also took top honors in the 100-free (:45.86). The UWM swimmer also helped the 400-free relay team to a pair of wins during the week.

Dow, a sophomore from Houston, Texas, helped lead Youngstown State to the program’s first ever dual-meet win versus Wright State. Last season’s Co-Newcomer of the Year in the Horizon League won the 100-back (:58.51) and 200-back (2:07.39) and finished second in the 200-individual medley (2:13.69). She was the only swimmer at the meet to finish with three top-two individual finishes. Dow was also on the 200-medley relay team that finished second in a time of 1:49.21.
