Cleveland State 3 Robert Morris 0

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland State earned its second straight shutout and won for the fourth time in as many times at home this season with a 3-0 victory over Robert Morris on Sunday at Krenzler Field.

The Vikings improved to 4-4 this season, while the Colonials fell to 4-3-1.

It marked the first time CSU posted back-to-back shutouts since October of 2010 when the Vikings defeated Wright State (1-0 on Oct. 15) and won at Valparaiso 2-0 on Oct. 22.

CSU got on the board right before the end of the first half when freshman Sarah Kaiser scored her second goal in as many games with 2:47 to play in the half.

Kaiser took control of the ball on a Colonial clear, dribbled a few times and unleashed a shot from about 25 yards out that found the upper right corner.

The Vikings wasted little time in adding to the lead in the second half as sophomore Vickie Havas made it 2-0 four minutes into the half with her second goal of the year. Junior Kelcey Fischer tallied the assist.

Fischer started the run and found Havas on the left sideline. Havas worked her way to the middle of the field, finding a lane and took a shot from 25 yards out that found the back of the net.

Freshman Kaila Sargema scored the first goal of her career to make it 3-0 at the 64:48 mark. Havas, who had the assist on the goal, took a free kick from about 30 yards out that was saved by the RMU keeper, but Sargema was able to follow it up and tally the goal.

The Vikings dominated the offensive end, out-shooting the Colonials, 19-10.

Sophomore Sarah Wood made seven saves to earn the shutout. Two Colonial goalkeepers combined to make nine saves.

The Vikings return to action on Wednesday (Sept. 18) when CSU hosts Madonna at 4:00 p.m. at Krenzler Field.

Junior Cara Armstrong and sophomore Katie Hohmann each scored their first goals of the season, but the Penguins fell to 1-6-1. Northern Kentucky improves to 4-3-1.

Evansville 2 Valparaiso 1

For the first time in over a calendar year, the Valparaiso women’s soccer team surrendered more than one goal, and despite pulling one back late in the game, the Crusaders fell by a 2-1 final at Evansville Sunday afternoon.

Valpo fell victim to a mis-clearance late in the first half, as in the 36th minute, Abby Springer was able to finish a cross from close range in the middle of the box to make it 1-0 Purple Aces.  The hosts doubled their lead a short time into the second half off a corner kick, as a volley by Bronwyn Boswell gave Evansville a 2-0 advantage.

The Crusaders were able to pull within one goal late in the second half on an individual effort by sophomore Jenny Fassbinder (Hudson, Wis./Hudson).  In the 85th minute, Fassbinder dribbled from the left side of the area into the middle of the field and struck a shot into the upper left corner of the net, eluding Evansville goalkeeper Simone Busby to pull Valpo back within 2-1.  The Crusaders would get one last shot in the final few minutes, but the effort was wide, as the hosts earned the win.

Evansville (5-2-1) out-shot the Crusaders on the afternoon by a 21-9 count and put nine shots on goal to Valpo’s three.  Kristen Manski (St. Charles, Ill./North) made seven saves to keep the Purple Aces at just two goals, while Busby made two saves to earn the win for Evansville.

Valparaiso (4-3-1) returns home for its final pair of non-league contests next weekend.  The Crusaders start the weekend by hosting Western Illinois at 7:30 p.m. on Friday evening, with live stats available through ValpoAthletics.com.

Northwestern 2 Oakland 0

EVANSTON, Ill. - Goalkeeper Payj O'Shea gathered seven saves for Oakland Sunday afternoon in a 2-0 loss at Northwestern at Lakeside Field. With the loss, Oakland drops to 3-4-1 overall while Northwestern improves to 2-4-2.

"We really struggled to connect our passes," said interim head coach Dave Morgan. "It wasn't our best effort collectively. The bright side, however, is we'll fix it. Our mistakes were nothing we can't correct."

In a game that featured light rain that turned heavy in the second half, Northwestern posted a 23-5 shots advantage, but only a 9-2 mark in shots on goal. The Wildcats tallied one goal in each half - in the 39th and 68th minutes - for the game's only scores.

The margin on corner kicks was much tighter with a 6-4 lead in favor of the host Wildcats. Oakland had two corner kicks apiece in each half.

Kyla Kellermann led Oakland with two shots, while Serena San Cartier and Natalie Righetti had the shots on goal for the Golden Grizzlies.

Wisconsin 3 Milwaukee 0

Madison, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team recorded numerous dangerous chances on offense but could not come back from an early deficit in falling to the University of Wisconsin, 3-0, Sunday afternoon from McClimon Soccer Complex.

"We didn't play our best match today," Milwaukee head coach Greg Henschel said. "That end of it is disappointing. It has been a tough schedule so far and coming back from Ohio Friday night might have impacted us a little bit because we just didn't come out with the energy that our team is known for and that we've seen from our team all season."

Wisconsin (5-1-1) got on the board early off a great individual effort by Rose Levelle. The midfielder cut through the Panther (1-6-1) midfield and played a perfectly timed through ball to Kodee Williams, who took one touch and pushed the ball past a sliding Paige Lincicum.

The Badgers made it 2-0 in the 15th minute as a corner kick was bounced around in box and Marisa Kresge was able to just slide it across the line.

It looked like Milwaukee would get on the board and close the gap as Krissy Dorre collected a pass in the right side of the box midway through the first half, but her shot went just wide of the far post.

The Panthers generated back-to-back scoring chances early in the second half and it looked like they would finally break through. Kelsey Holbert perfectly played a ball through to Morgan LaPlant as she snuck behind the defense, but the onrushing Badger keeper forced an early shot and it went just wide.

Minutes later, Holbert again played the ball through to the attack where Dorre was waiting this time, but her shot from the right just caught the side netting.

"I was pleased to see the team get back to what we do in the second half," Henschel said. "We created some nice chances and broke them down a few times. I think the way we are moving the ball, there is some fantastic play but we just need to make it a lot more consistent. There were three or four quality chances in the second half where a result of our quick play and our decisive play and we just need to bring that for a more consistent length of the match."

Wisconsin added a third goal late as Cara Walls scored her seventh of the season.

Lincicum tallied five saves on the day with her defense also doing a lot of work in blocking numerous shot attempts by the Badgers.

Milwaukee will wrap up its five-game road trip Friday as it heads to Normal, Ill. for a game against Illinois State. Kick off is set for 4 p.m.

Wright State 2 Dayton 2 (2 ot)

The Flyers opened the scoring at the 30:51 mark of the first half as sophomore midfielder Ashley Campbell recorded her fifth goal of the season with the assist going to sophomore midfielder Nicole Waters, her third of the year.

Dayton controlled play throughout the first half, outshooting the Raiders 23-5, but the margin remained 1-0 thanks in part to eight saves from WSU senior goalkeeper Brooke McCurdy.

WSU tied the contest early in the second half at the 47:43 mark as sophomore forward Ini Umotong tallied her first goal of the season with sophomore midfielder Kalee Thompson earning the assist, her second of the year.

The Raiders then went up 2-1 at the 76:51mark as senior forward Emilie Fillion posted her fourth goal of 2013.  Sophomore forward Amy Anderson picked up the assist, her first.
