INDIANAPOLIS – Detroit opened Horizon League play with a tough road win, while Wright State stunned Milwaukee to begin the League season. In non-conference action, Youngstown State dropped a difficult match to Butler.
Wright State 1, Milwaukee 0 (2OT)
Wright State and Milwaukee appeared headed for a tie at Engelmann Stadium until a Sarah Gross goal on a header with two seconds remaining in double overtime gave the Raiders the 1-0 win the teams’ Horizon League opener.
The win was the first for Wright State (5-2-3, 1-0-0 Horizon) at Milwaukee (1-6-1, 0-1-0 Horizon) since Oct. 1, 1989. The loss was the first at home for the Panthers in Horizon League play since the 2010 season.
With time ticking away, Ini Umotong set the stage for the golden goal as Panther goalkeeper Jamie Forbes punched her shot over the cross bar, resulting in a corner kick by Allie Metzler. Metzler raced into the corner and struck a quick ball that Sarah Gross was able to head into the net with just two seconds remaining on the clock.
Milwaukee finished with a 15-11 shot advantage, including 9-4 on shots on goal, but Raiders goalkeeper Brooke McCurdy recorded the shutout with nine saves.
Detroit 1, Green Bay 0
Seemingly headed for overtime, Abby McCollum lifted Detroit to a 1-0 victory in regulation over Green Bay at Aldo Santaga Stadium.
Detroit (4-4-1, 1-0-0 Horizon) took 14 shots, compared with Green Bay’s (3-6-0, 0-1-0 Horizon) two, but could not beat Phoenix keeper Katy Pilarzyk, who finished with eight saves.
The game was scoreless for 84 minutes until the Titans struck for the winning goal. Sarah Dzuris started the scoring play with a corner kick and that was followed by a header from Alyssa Riley, which was saved. However, McCollum was right there to collect the rebound and put in the marker Dzuris and Riley were both credited with an assist on the play.
Nora Abolins picked up her fourth shutout of the year with the pair of saves.
Butler 2, Youngstown State 1
Surrendering two first half goals, Youngstown State battled back, but could not find the equalizing goal in a 2-1 loss at Butler.
Youngstown State (4-4-0) dropped its fourth straight match, but had several looks at tying the match after Jade Flory’s 59th minute goal brought the Penguins within 2-1. However, the Penguins could not net the tying goal.
Butler scored twice in the first 13 minutes of play to take the lead.
