Wright State's Duggins Receives Horizon League Men's Basketball Player of the Week Honor

INDIANAPOLIS – Wright State senior guard Vaughn Duggins (Pendleton, Ind.) has been named Horizon League Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, for the week beginning Jan. 24.  The honor is the first of Duggins’s career.

Wright State remained in third place in the Horizon League, splitting its road trip to Green Bay and Milwaukee.  The Raiders moved to 7-4 with a 63-61 win over the Phoenix on Friday and a 54-53 setback to the Panthers on Sunday afternoon.

Duggins led the Raiders in scoring in both games, helping the Raiders hang around at Green Bay with a game-high 19 points, 12 of which came in the second half.  The senior served as a facilitator for the Raiders offense as well, handing out a team-best four assists, the last coming on a key three-pointer with just over a minute to play to set up the road victory.

In Milwaukee, Duggins carried the Wright State offense throughout, matching his career high with 26 points the 54-53 defeat.  Duggins keyed multiple runs, scoring eight points early while helping bring the Raiders back late with a key three that created multiple chances for Wright State to tie or take the lead at the end of the game.

The output by Duggins in Milwaukee matched his career high set on Jan. 1, 2011, when he also finished with 26 in a 67-64 victory over Green Bay.  For the week, the Pendleton, Ind.-native averaged 22.5 ppg, 4.0 rpg and 3.5 apg while going 15-for-25 from the field, including a 4-of-7 effort from three-point range.  The senior was a perfect 11-for-11 from the charity stripe.

Sitting a half-game ahead of Butler and Milwaukee in the Horizon League standings, Wright State returns to the WSU Nutter Center for three straight conference contests.  The Raiders host Loyola at 7 p.m. ET on Thursday, Feb. 5 before welcoming UIC for a 7 p.m. ET tip on Saturday, Feb. 7.  Wright State will close its homestand with a Feb. 7 contest versus Youngstown State at 7 p.m. ET.  All three games will be carried live on the Horizon League Network, available on HorizonLeague.com.

Top Performers for the Week:
Matt Howard, Butler (Sr., F) - In an 85-79 overtime setback at Valparaiso, Howard posted his third straight double-double, leading the Bulldogs with 17 points and 10 rebounds.  Earlier in the week, Howard was named as a finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, presented for notable achievement in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition.

Norris Cole, Cleveland State (Sr., G) - Leading Cleveland State to the top of the Horizon League standings with victories at Loyola and at UIC, Cole averaged 19.5 ppg, 4.5 rpg and 6.0 apg.  Cole’s 12 assists came with just three turnovers as he continued to pace the Horizon League in both scoring, assists and steals.

Rahmon Fletcher, Green Bay (Sr., G) - Fletched helped Green Bay move into position for a home game in the Horizon League Tournament, scoring a season-high 24 points in Sunday’s 85-74 victory over Detroit.  The senior went 8-for-13 in the game and handed out five assists; Fletcher added 12 points and six assists in Friday’s two-point loss to Wright State.

Geoff McCammon, Loyola (Sr., G) - Splitting the weekend, McCammon knocked down 6-of-14 three-point field goals en route to averaging 18.5 ppg and moved into sixth place on Loyola’s career three-point field goals register.  Leading the Ramblers with 14.0 ppg despite coming off the bench in 13 outings this season, McCammon has scored 20 or more points off the bench four times this season, including a 27-point effort in an 84-71 win over Youngstown State on Jan. 27.

Anthony Hill, Milwaukee (Sr., F) - Hill helped Milwaukee win three straight games for the first time since November, collecting home victories over Detroit and Wright State.  The senior led the way with 22 points against the Raiders, knocking down 14-of-17 free throws as he controlled the paint.  Hill added 13 points and eight boards as Milwaukee rallied late for a 72-67 victory over Detroit.

Brad Birton, UIC (Sr., F) - Birton posted his first two double-doubles of the season as UIC split its homestand against Cleveland State and Youngstown State.  On Saturday, Birton recorded the double-double 17 minutes into the game, finishing with 14 points and a career-best 14 caroms.  The 14-point effort matched his career high, which the senior set on Thursday night in a 14-point, 10-rebound effort.

Ryan Brokehoff, Valparaiso (So., G/F) - Scoring 14 of his team-high 16 points in the second half and overtime, Broekhoff helped Valparaiso pick up a key League win over Butler on Saturday.  The sophomore knocked down all four of his three-pointers in the final 25 minutes of play as the Crusaders knocked off Butler for the first time since Dec. 4, 1993.

Kendrick Perry, Youngstown State (Fr., G) - Perry exploded for a career-best 21 points against Loyola on Thursday evening, knocking down 9-of-16 attempts.  The freshman point dished out seven assists in the contest and helped the Penguins continue to move towards a new school record for three-point field goals, hitting 3-of-7 on the week.
