Youngstown State Women's Golf Team to Play in South Bend Regional

One day after winning the Horizon League Championship, the Youngstown State women's golf team learned it will play in the South Bend regional May 7-9 as the NCAA field was announced Monday night on the Golf Channel.

The 54-hole South Bend regional will be played at Warren Golf Course in Notre Dame, Ind. The University of Notre Dame will host. Six teams and three individuals will advance from each regional.

The Penguins, making their NCAA Tournament debut, will compete against Arizona, Duke, Oklahoma State, Wake Forest, UC Davis, Pepperdine, Tulane, Notre Dame, Purdue, Kent State, Louisville, San Jose State, North Carolina, Kentucky, Harvard, Troy and Eastern Kentucky in the regional.

Youngstown State was tied for first after the first day of the Horizon League Championship played at Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. The Penguins had a four-hole lead after day two and eventually pulled away on Sunday in the third round to win by 11 strokes. Junior Emily Dixon led the Penguins at the tournament as she made up an eight-stroke deficit in the third round to claim medalist honors by one stroke. Dixon was joined on the All-Tournament team by senior Allison Mitzel and Aislynn Merling who finished third and fourth respectively.

The national championships will be May 22-27 at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Florida, hosted by the University of South Florida. The final three days of the championship will be televised live by the Golf Channel.
