2011 Wbb Bracket

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Butler will make its second consecutive appearance in the Horizon League women’s basketball championship game, while Green Bay will play for its third title in the last five years.  The Bulldogs knocked off Cleveland State and the Phoenix downed Wright State in the semifinal rounds on Friday at Green Bay’s Kress Center.

No. 13/11 Green Bay furthered its record setting season to 31 wins with a 95-65 victory over Wright State.  The top-seeded Phoenix will play for the championship title for the 13th time overall and second time under head coach Matt Bollant.

Green Bay sophomore Lydia Bauer had a game-high 27 points in just 20 minutes of play, while seniors Kayla Tetschlag and Celeste Hoewisch had 18 and 17 points, respectively, and junior Julie Wojta had a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Wright State senior LaShawna Thomas scored 21 points for the Raiders, while Ta-Myra Davis and Shaunda Sandifer both finished with 13.

Green Bay will host the second-seeded Bulldogs, who advanced to the finals after defeating Cleveland State, 68-54, on Friday snapping the Viking’s eight-game winning streak. 

Butler moved to 20-12 with the win, while Cleveland State, which joined Green Bay in making its fourth straight appearance in the semifinals, will advance to the postseason and take part in the WBI Classic next week.

The Vikings will head into the post season with a 20-11 overall mark.

Butler was led by seniors Chloe Hamilton and Alyssa Pittman, who each contributed 22 points in the win, while senior teammate Brittany Bowen added 13.

Senior Shawnita Garland led Cleveland State with 20 points and nine rebounds, while Destinee Blue had her tenth double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

The winner of the 2011 Horizon League women’s basketball championship will receive an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament.
