The seeds held true as No. 7 Detroit downed No. 10 Valparaiso (57-50) and No. 8 Loyola knocked off No. 9 Youngstown State (49-47) in the opening rounds of the Horizon League women’s basketball championship. Quarterfinals are set to begin on Wednesday with three games tipping off at 7pm ET followed by an 8pm contest.
The Titans moved to 13-17 overall and 6-12 in the conference with the win and will face Butler in the quarterfinals, while the Crusaders conclude their season at 7-24 with a 4-14 Horizon League mark.
Detroit and Butler split the regular season as the Bulldogs claimed a 72-66 win in Calihan Hall, while UDM went into Hinkle Fieldhouse and pulled out a 55-51 victory.
The Ramblers improved to 12-18 overall and now own a 5-13 League record with the win and will travel to Green Bay for their quarterfinal game. The Penguins finished their season 6-24 and 4-14 in the conference.
No. 13/11 Green Bay is undefeated in conference play this year and has only one loss on the season. Tonight’s game marks the sixth time the Ramblers and Phoenix meet in the conference tournament in which Green Bay owns a 6-0 record.
No. 5 Milwaukee (12-17, 9-9) will travel to No. 4 Wright State for the second straight week. The Panthers lost to the Raiders in the regular season finale last Saturday, 86-69, as WSU swept the season.
Also tonight, third-seeded Cleveland State will host sixth-seeded UIC at 7pm ET.
The Vikings are 19-10 overall and tied for second in the league at 12-6, after defeating UIC, 79-68, to finish off the regular season on Saturday. The Flames are 14-15 overall and tied Milwaukee for fifth place in the league with a 9-9 mark.
This is the third consecutive year that Cleveland State hosts UIC in the quarterfinals in which the Vikings have won the last two, but the two teams split the regular season with both winning at home.
