HOWIE-IN-THE-HILLS--The 2011 Horizon League Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships begin this weekend at Mission Inn Resort in Howie-In-The-Hills, Fla. The three day event will start with the men teeing off at 7:30am ET and the women following at 10am on Friday and will conclude on Sunday with both teams teeing off at 7:30 am.
Both tournaments feature 54 holes of par 72 golf with the winner of each event earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
Last season Detroit picked up both the men’s and women’s titles. The Titan women claimed their first ever Horizon League Championship as then-junior Alainna Stefan took medalist honors.
Stefan was also named to the All-League team and head coach Terri-Anthony Ryan was named Horizon League Coach of the Year, the first-ever for the Titans.
Cleveland State’s Ariel Sparrow earned Newcomer of the Year honors in 2010.
The Titan men picked up their fifth title in the last nine years in 2010 as two members were named to the All-Tournament team including then junior Britt Pronk.
Detroit’s Mark Engel and Green Bay's Bill Lindmark shared Coach of the Year laurels as the vote was split for only the second time in conference history. The award marked Engel's fourth career honor while Lindmark earned his second all-time.
Green Bay’s Chad Ebert took home Newcomer of the Year accolades last year.
The Horizon League Networkwill be on hand to cover the annual event and provide video recaps of each championship, including interviews with top players and coaches.
