Men's HL Championship Round 3 Scores Team Individuals

The Butler women’s golf team and the Loyola men’s golf team were on top of their respective fields heading into the final day of competition at the Horizon League Golf Championships and the two teams where still on top at the end as the two teams won the 2012 League Championships played at Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.

The Bulldogs grabbed an 11-stroke lead after the first day of competition and never looked back in winning their second consecutive League championship. Butler placed four individuals in the top-eight of the standings led by Clare Cornelius who finished in third. Two-time Horizon League Player of the Year Michele Nash finished fifth, while Isabella Lambert was sixth and Jenna Peters finished eighth.

Detroit and Loyola finished tied for second, 25 strokes behind the Bulldogs. Cleveland State finished in fourth place, while Youngstown State was in fifth. The field was rounded out by Green Bay, Valparaiso and UIC.

For only the second time in women’s championship history, two women finished tied for medalist honors. Detroit’s Lindsey Lammers and Loyola’s Ann Vrdolyak both finished with a three-day score of 238 to force a one-hole playoff. Lammers was victorious in the playoff capping a fantastic comeback story for the All-League selection who was playing in her first tournament of the spring after winning three tournaments in the fall.

Lammers and Vrdolyak headlined the All-Tournament team and were joined by Cornelius, Lambert and Nash from Butler and Allison Mitzel and Sarah Heimlich from Youngstown State.

The men’s championships entered the final day with the top-four teams within seven strokes of each other as Loyola, Green Bay, Cleveland State and Detroit all had legitimate hopes of taking home the title. The Ramblers though managed to match second place Green Bay stroke-for-stroke as both teams shot a final day 304 to win the event by two strokes. The Ramblers were led by Alex Cusumano who finished in a tie-for-second with a three-day score of 224. Nick Dennis and Nick Willenborg both finished with three-day scores of 227 to place in a tie-for-sixth.

Green Bay finished in second four strokes ahead of third place finishing Cleveland State. Detroit finished in fourth, three strokes behind the Vikings. Wright State was fifth, while Butler, Valparaiso and Youngstown State finished sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively.

Chad Ebert of Green Bay was the men’s individual medalist after finishing with a three-day score of 222, six-over-par. Ebert shot a two-over-par 74 and a four-over-par 76 before shooting a final day 72 to win by two strokes over the trio of Andrew Wegeng from Butler, Cusumano and his teammate Cam Fuller.

Ebert, Wegeng, Cusumano, Fuller, Dennis and Willenborg were joined on the All-Tournament team by Jonathan Roemer of Cleveland State, Cody Fixer of Wright State and Lucas Kim and Michael Nedoszytko of Detroit.
