The semifinals are set for the Horizon League Men’s Soccer Championship, as Cleveland State and Wright State advanced with victories. Hosting No. 5 Detroit, the fourth-seeded Vikings used a golden goal in the 106th minute to move on, while sixth-seeded Wright State controlled the run of play in knocking off No. 3 Northern Kentucky.
Cleveland State will meet No. 2 Oakland in the first tournament semifinal on Thursday, Nov. 12, at 5:30 p.m. ET. Wright State will take on top-seeded UIC at 8 p.m. ET.
Cleveland State 1, Detroit 0 (2OT)
Less than four minutes from the match being decided in penalty kicks, Hesham Hammouda sent Cleveland State into the Horizon League Men’s Soccer Championship semifinals with a golden goal as the fourth-seeded Vikings knocked off visiting Detroit 1-0.
Hammouda’s goal, his third of the season, came off an assist from Jake Lagania, who fed the sophomore on the right side of the box, where he was able to beat Nathan Steinwascher.
Steinwascher turned in four saves for the Titans; his counterpart across the field Aleksander Drobac made one save on the night in collecting the shutout.
Wright State 2, Northern Kentucky 0
Dominating possession, No. 6 Wright State used goals in the 36th and 54th minutes to knock off No. 3 Northern Kentucky and advance to the Horizon League Men’s Soccer Championship semifinals.
Wright State controlled the run of play to return to the League semifinals for the second consecutive year. Zach Zwiesler’s goal in the 36th minute proved to be the game-winner as the Raiders tallied their eighth shutout of the season.
Jake Stovall’s long throw from the right side carried into the box, where Zwiesler was able to control it before sending a low shot past NKU’s A.J. Fleak.
Fleak was injured on the Raiders’ second tally, as AJ Paterson’s howler from 25 yards out was placed out of the reach of the diving keeper.
Tyler Blackmer did not have to make a save in the match as he notched the shutout. Wright State outshot Northern Kentucky, 16-8, and held an 11-3 advantage in corner kicks.
