Detroit Men & Women Post Perfect Dual Records at IPFW

The University of Detroit men's track & field team competed in the IPFW Quadrangular at the Hillard Gates Sports Center and the Titans went 3-0 in separate dual meets.

After snowy conditions delayed the start of the competition by an hour, the Titans posted three scored dual-meet victories. Detroit posted a 100-52 score over Xavier (Ohio), a 110-18 total over IUPUI, and an 89-55 win over Butler.

There were a plethora of highlights littered throughout the day from running events to jumps and distance runs and throws, the men's squad was able to come out on top in more than a few events.

It was all Titans in the weight throw as Detroit finished 1-2-3. Senior Eric Lewis was first with a mark of 18.47m, junior Colin Cashner was second at 16.29m which moved him into the No. 7 spot on Detroit's all-time list and the tenth Titan to throw beyond 50 feet. A third Titan thrower in sophomore Jake Millyard set a personal best with a throw of 14.73m for third and the No. 12 spot on the Titan all-time list. Lewis also earned a second win throwing the shot put a distance of 13.41m and Millyard set another PR throwing 12.79 in that event.

In the 60 meters, freshman Brandon Wilks ran 7.03, .03 off his personal best, to place first among the field of eight.

In the mile run, redshirt freshman Austin Wigent was third with a new personal best of 4:20.23 which moved him into the No. 15 position on the Titan all-time list while juniorRyan Hofsess was close behind in fifth place at 4:25.91.

In the 400 meters, freshman Khalil Parris came out on top with a time of 50.19 and sophomore Colton Wirgau was third at 51.55.

In the 800 meters, sophomore Joshua Carolin was second with a mark of 1:58.51.

In the 3000 meters, freshman Ryan Leahy and sophomore Derek Gielarowski both had quality runs for Detroit. Leahy's time of 8:41.60 moved him into the No. 7 spot on the Titan all-time record list and Gielarowski's mark of 8:47.54 was good for No. 13 on the Titan all-time list and third place in the field of 13 runners.

In the long jump, freshman Ilia Panev made his collegiate debut in the event with a leap of 6.21m which was good for second in the field of seven.

On the women’s side, the Titans went 4-0 in separate dual meets.

The Titan throwers had another good day as senior Allyson Koglin came in second with in weight throw at 15.79m in a field of six. Freshman Ashley Bussing set a personal best for the second straight week with a toss of 12.47m to improve on her mark of 12.21 and finish third in the event. Bussing was also third in the shot put with a personal best of 12.47m and sophomore Aisha Potts-Tyre also had a PR at 10.24m.

Sophomore Allison Garner took a win in the 60 meter run with a time of 7.86 topping a field of eight.

In the high jump, junior Hana Hunt had to win a jump off to take first place but she did with a clearance of 1.55m. The multi-athlete also set a personal best in the shot put with a toss of 8.81m.

Senior Louisa Coppola led from start-to-finish among 16 runners in the mile run with a time of 5:00.23 as she just missed out on a time of under five minutes.

In the 60 meter hurdles, senior Brandee Hart had a time of 9.09 and sophomore Aisha Potts-Tyre had a mark of 9.44 as the pair finished 1-2.

In the 400 meter run, it was as easy as 1-2-3 for the Titans as Detroit claimed the top three positions in the field of nine. Junior Jasmine Greene at 59.75, graduate studentShannon Marchant at 1:00.06, and freshman Jayona Dent at 1:01.10.

In the 4x400 meter relay, the Titan foursome of Hart, Hunt, Marchant, and Greene had a time of 3:59.90 which was just off the team's top season mark of 3:59.81 set at the Red Simmons Invitational at Michigan last weekend.

The next scheduled meet for Detroit is scheduled for Jan. 31 as the Titans will participate in the Findlay Open in Findlay, Ohio.

John Craft Invite 
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's track & field team won three of the day's 16 events and took second in four more to earn a second-place finish at the John Craft Invite hosted by Eastern Illinois Saturday afternoon at Lantz Fieldhouse.

Milwaukee finished with 118 points on the day for second place. EIU won the meet with 198 points. Murray State was third at 115.5, Western Illinois was fourth at 86.5 and Bradley rounded out the scoring at 51.

"I'm happy with the meet at this time of year and I'm looking forward to taking another step forward next week," Milwaukee head coach Pete Corfeld said. "Both teams finished second in the team scoring. It was a good showing there. We were looking more for building blocks for the year and I feel like we made good progress from the last meet.”

For the second-straight week, Simbi Laaro took the top spot in the 60m, blowing away the field with a blazing time of 7.55, more than two-tenths of a second ahead of second place. Sophomore CherRay Dixon also scored for UWM in the event, taking fifth in 7.94.

Anuli Okonkwo also won a sprint event for the Panthers on Saturday. The sophomore topped the field in the 200m with a winning time of 26.07. Dixon was again right behind at 26.38 for third and Sherice Hewett was fourth with the same time.

Hewett also took first in triple jump on the day, posting a winning leap of 11.61m (38-1 ¼) to earn 10 points for her team.

LaBreya Johnson came in second in long jump with a leap of 5.21m (17-1 ¼).

Nancy Harmon also posted a runner-up finish on the day. The senior had a toss of 16.95m (55-7 ½) in weight throw to cruise into a second place.

Milwaukee's 4x400m relay team of Laaro, Chelsea Maxey, Michelle Garner and Okonkwo finished just shy of a winning spot, taking second overall with a season-best time of 4:01.59.

UWM had three runners in the final of the 60m hurdles competition. Freshman Morgan Torrence scored and placed sixth in 9.58, Maxey was seventh at 9.63 and Tess Nelson was eighth at 9.74.

Freshman Leah Holmes finished runner-up in the 800m with a time of 2:20.96.

With 22 top-five finishes, the Panther men's track & field team continued its hot start to the season with a second-place showing.

UWM finished with 150 points for second place. EIU won the meet with 233 points. Western Illinois was third at 78 and Bradley closed out the scoring at 48.

Milwaukee took the top two spots in shot put on the afternoon. Junior Alex Chollet led the field with a mark of 14.96m (49-1) with freshman Silas Petrie just behind at 14.48m (47-6 ¼) for second.

In weight throw, Chollet was third with a toss of 16.63m (54-6 ¾), a season best. Jake Goodwiler also had a season-best mark of 14.90m (48-10 ¾) for sixth.

UWM finished 1-2-3 in the 60 hurdles for the second-straight week. Alex Delveaux won the event, also for the second-straight week, crossing the line at 8.13, just edging out Dexter Schleis (8.15) and Jordan Schmidt (8.26).

The Panthers took two of the top-three spots in the DMR. Reed Schmidt, Taylor Koss, Jeff Pigg and Jake Reilly combined to finish the relay in 10:19.23 for first overall, a full 11 seconds ahead of second place. Milwaukee's second team of Tony Sustachek, Kurt Sustachek, Joseph Morgan and Caleb Abfall were third in 10:37.68.

Milwaukee's 4x400m relay team also had a strong showing on the day. Davontae Johnson, Marquis Johnson, J. Schmidt and Schleis teamed up and took second, crossing the line in 3:23.54, one second behind first place.

In the 400m, UWM took three of the top-five spots. M. Johnson finished runner-up with a time of 49.28, a mere 0.14 seconds from the top spot. Koss came in fourth at 51.25 and D. Johnson was fifth at 51.61.

Sam Leschisin placed second in the mile with a time of 4:20.05 just ahead of Abfall at 4:21.58. Also finishing runner-up on the day was T. Sustachek in the 800m with a time of 1:56.91.

Brett Pozolinski had a pair of third-place finishes on the day. In the high jump, the sophomore tied his season best with a height of 1.98m (6-6). In triple jump, he also took third with a leap of 13.12m (43-0 ½), just shy of his season-best. Aaron Dillon also scored for Milwaukee, taking fifth.

In long jump, Nate Pozolinski came in third at 6.47m (21-2 ¾), with teammate Nate Havener just behind in fourth at 6.28m (20-7 ¼).

Other top finishers for UWM on the day include Delveaux taking third in the 200m (22.65) and Matt Ferryplacing fourth in the 60m (7.06).

Milwaukee continues its road swing next weekend when it heads to the Jack Jennett Invitational hosted by Northern Iowa. The two-day meet kicks off Friday, Jan. 31 and wraps up the following day.

YSU Invitational
The Youngstown State men's and women's track and field teams continued their indoor track season hosting the YSU Invitational Friday at the WATTS. The Penguins competed against 25 other teams including four Division I schools consisting of West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Duquesne, and Virginia Military Institute.

Senior Ciara Jarrett had an excellent debut for the Penguins in her first meet of the season finishing first in three events while senior Sam Hamilton, senior Eric Rupe, and senior Bobby Grace also earned a first-place finish.

Sam Hamilton lapped everyone in the 5000m race giving her a first-place finish with a time of 16:37; 1:14 faster than second place finisher Jenny Delsignore of Duquesne. Freshman twins McKinsie and Michelle Klim finished back to back in the 5000 meter race where McKinsie placed third (17:59) and Michelle finished fourth (18:03).

Freshman Chenera Lacy jumped her second best jump of the season in high jump with a leap of 1.70m giving herself a third place finish. Freshman Mackenzie Sturtz also finished in the top five for high jump finishing fifth with a jump of 1.65m. Sophomore Jennifer Neider competed in the shot put for the Penguins and finished in fourth-place with a throw of 14.07m which gives her two top four finishes in the first two meets of the season for YSU.

In the 400m dash sophomore Jen Shiley placed third clocking in a time of 58.01 while senior Alteeka Vanwright finished in sixth place (59.19). Ciara Jarrett got her first two wins of the season as a Penguin in the 60m dash finishing with a time of 7.67 and in the 200m dash with a time of 24.88. Senior Alexis Washington wasn't far behind in the 200m where she finished in fourth place (25.77).

Ciara Jarrett continued her impressive performance in the meet in the long jump where she finished in first place with a jump of 5.41m and her teammate Chenera Lacy also finished in the top eight placing eighth jumping 5.15m. Both freshman Savannah Osborne and Ellie Polluck made it to the triple jump finals where Savannah finished in third place (11.14m) and Ellie placed eighth (10.63m).

Eric Rupe finished first in the 5000m run with a time of 14:47 while fellow penguin Austin McLean picked up another top four finish placing fourth in the 5000m at a time of 14:57.

In the field events sophomore Connor Neu placed second in the weight throw with a throw of 19.75m while senior Bobby Grace added another win in the shot put throwing 19.62m beating the school record by 1.04 meters. Freshman Stephen Lyons and junior Eric Vendemia also placed in the shot put with Lyons finishing fifth (15.79) and Vendemia finishing eighth (15.48).

The Penguins are back in action on Jan. 31-Feb. 1 where they will compete in the SPIRE Invitational at Geneva, Ohio.

Gladstein Invitational/Greyhound Classic
The Wright State track & field teams continued their season at the Gladstein Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Bloomington, IN. and a separate team competed at the Greyhound Classic in Indianapolis, Ind.

At the Gladstein Invitational, the Raiders were led by an eighth-place finish by Kacia Grant in the 200m dash (25.88).

Meanwhile, Maria Harrison paced the Raiders in the field events at the Greyhound Classic. Harrison took fourth in the weight throw with a toss of 14.80m and also posted a second-place finish in the shot put (13.05m).

Courtney Ballard posted a first-place finish in the pole vault (3.30m).

In track events, two relay teams posted third-place finishes. In the women’s distance medley, the team of Vanessa Hopwood, Alexandra Brown, Jessica Doepker, and Rachel Janson posted a time of 13:18.73. In the 4x400, Grant, Jameela Henderson, Kaley Moss, and Katasha Griffiths turned in a time of 4:16.42.

The Raiders are back in action on Jan. 31 at Penn State.
