No. 11 Michigan 2 Detroit 0
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (9/12/2013) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team held on and kept playing strong to stay within one goal until the final 1:48 of the contest. It was then that No. 11 ranked Michigan scored its second goal of the match for a 2-0 win at the U-M Soccer Stadium Thursday evening.
The Wolverines (6-0) held a 27-2 shooting advantage, 7-0 on goal, and had seven corner kicks to zero for Detroit (2-4-1).
The play of the Titans was very aggressive but produced no goals in the opening frame keeping the score 0-0 heading into halftime.
The second half brought inclement weather as rain started to fall and UDM came out controlling play in the first five minutes of the frame. Offensively and defensively, Detroit was very aggressive despite the large shot margin. Time and time again, the strong and aggressive play consistently led to a Titan blocked shot or a wide shot attempt from Michigan.
"I felt we played a very strong and very athletic team and we did a great job defensively with strong possession," said UDM women's soccer head coach Mike Lupenec. "There is a reason why they are undefeated and ranked number 11 in the country."
UDM sophomore goalkeeper Martha Dunbar made six saves in the contest. A pair of diving saves, stopping what would have been two automatic goals, and many more saves from up close were just a few of the stops that Dunbar made that helped keep Detroit within a goal.
Michigan finally broke through in the 56th minute before adding a late goal at the 88:08 mark.
"I'm proud of how the girls competed but sometimes you have to tip your hat to the competitor. Top to bottom, Michigan is a very good soccer team and very strong with not many weaknesses," added Lupenec.
Detroit will play its first a home match of the 2013 season when it hosts Bowling Green on Sept. 17 at 3:00 p.m. at Titan Field.

Milwaukee 4 Miami (Ohio) 3
Oxford, Ohio - Kelly Lewers scored with 1:07 left on the clock in regulation to give the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team a thrilling 4-3 victory over Miami University Friday afternoon from Miami Soccer Field.
Lewers collected a pass 25 yards from the goal, dribbled around two defenders and fired a left-footed shot at the 18 that found the side netting to give the Panthers (1-5-1) their first win of the year.
The win is number 299 in head coach Greg Henschel's career.
"It feels good," Henschel said. "The team had to really gut it out today and they did that all through the second half. They showed their resilience as they have shown all season. It was great to see and it was a well-deserved win."
Milwaukee got on the board first midway through the first half. Amy Kauffung played a ball from midfield to Lewers, who one-timed the ball perfectly to a streaking Kelsey Holbert. The junior got behind the defense and calmly beat the on-coming keeper for her first goal of the season.
UWM took a 1-0 lead into half but Miami (3-3-0) came out of the locker room and found two goals early after the break to grab a 2-1 lead.
The Panthers fought back though, drawing the game level in the 75th minute. Sara Stern passed the ball up to Lewers, who again one-timed the ball, this time finding Krissy Dorre. Dorre took one touch and slotted the ball far post for her fourth of the season.
After another goal by the RedHawks, UWM again showed its grit to again draw the game level. Dorre took a pass just outside the top of the box, drawing the defense in. She played the ball out to the right where Morgan LaPlant came on and blasted a shot into the upper 90 to make it 3-3 and set the scene for Lewers to find the game winner.
"It was nice to get the lead and come out of halftime up 1-0 and then to battle back in the second half is not an easy thing to do," Henschel said. "There's a lot of character in this team. Despite it being a young group, the character that's being shown is pretty impressive this year. I'm very encouraged by that."
Milwaukee freshman keeper Paige Lincicum made four saves on the game and notched the first win of her collegiate career.
The Panthers were extremely efficient on the offensive side of the ball, registering nine shots on the game with four finding the back of the net.
"We're feeling good about our offensive potential," Henschel said. "I think we felt good about it early in the season but we're finally gaining some confidence there. This team always has potential to score and we're looking forward to the next match."
UWM plays its fourth-straight game on the road Sunday, heading to Madison, Wis. to take on the Badgers. Kick off is set for 2 p.m. ET.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Pulling a defender in for a set piece in the first half, Justy Linton (Winnipeg, Manitoba) netted her first collegiate goal to propel the Green Bay women’s soccer team over Northern Illinois, 1-0, on Friday afternoon at Santaga Stadium.
The win kept the Phoenix perfect at home this season (3-0) and improved them to 3-2-3 overall. NIU dropped to 2-4-0.
Taking control of the match from the onset, Green Bay threatened 1:30 into the match when a Chandra Eigenberger (Green Bay, Wis.) cross found the head of Heidi Hartmann (Plymouth, Minn.) however the shot fell right into the hands of Huskies keeper Amy Carr.
Hartmann struck again in the 27th minute, but the Phoenix finally found the net in the 43rd minute on a corner kick. Eigenberger took the kick and Katie Schulz (Plymouth, Minn.) bounced it off her body before Linton found the back of the net for a rare double assist and a 1-0 lead.

Oakland 2 Northern Kentucky 1
ROCHESTER, Mich.- A quick one-two punch from Meghan Reynolds and Joan Sieja gave Oakland women's soccer what it needed in a 2-1 victory over Northern Kentucky Friday night at OU Soccer Field. With the win, Oakland improves to 3-3-1 while Northern Kentucky saw a three-game winning streak end to drop to 3-3-1.
The duo scored in the game's first 13 minutes on Oakland's first two shots on goal for the game, as the Golden Grizzlies registered an 18-13 shots advantage on the night.
"We created a number of opportunities; we worked on goal scoring during the course of the week," said interim head coach Dave Morgan. "We're taking much better shots when the opportunities are there."
Reynolds set the tone early in the sixth minute, racing down the right flank and blasting a 20-yard shot to the far post for the game's first goal. Sieja took her turn in the 13th minute, combining with Jamie Horne with a shot from close range to double the team's lead.
Oakland's precise placement was unable to put more tallies on the board. Four of the team's 18 shots on the night hit the goal structure: three off of the crossbar and one off the post.
Northern Kentucky answered to get one goal back in the 80th minute, but the Norse was unable to register the equalizer.
Oakland's Payj O'Shea made four saves in goal, while NKU's counterpart Tanner Ruberg made four saves of her own.
Oakland heads to the Windy City Sunday, Sept. 15 for a 2 p.m. ET game against Northwestern.

Valparaiso 0 IUPUI 0 (2OT)
The Valparaiso women's soccer team posted its fifth shutout in seven games this season on Friday evening in Indianapolis, Ind., dueling to a 0-0 draw with IUPUI.
The Crusaders have now surrendered just two goals through seven fixtures in 2013, just one of which has come from the run of play. Senior Kristen Manski (St. Charles, Ill./North) has been between the posts for each and every second this year, making five saves in her latest clean sheet on Friday. The shutout was the 27th of Manski's career, moving the reigning Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week into a tie for second place in league history in the category.
"Obviously when you battle for 110 minutes, you'd always be happier to have gotten the win, but we have to look at the picture as a whole," said Crusader head coach John Marovich. "When you're on the road and continuing to put things together, you're not going to turn your nose up at a time, especially preparing for a hard league season. I thought we did a better job offensively, ending up with 19 shots. We want to be better with those chances in the attacking third, but to get that many chances is something we haven't done all year. We also got ourselves 10 corner kicks, and had some real good chances off those corners."
The scoreless draw saw Valpo have the better of the shots category in the opening half, as the Crusaders out-shot IUPUI (3-2-2) 8-5 in the opening 45 minutes and forced Giselle Guzman to make two saves. The Jaguars held a 9-6 edge in shots in the second half, with Manski having to make all five of her saves in that period. Perhaps the Crusaders' best chance came in the 63rd minute, as freshman Allegra Godfrey (Oshkosh, Wis./Oshkosh) sent a strike towards the right side of the goal, but IUPUI substitute goalkeeper Nicole Kulovitz dove to her left to push the ball around the post.
It was the Crusaders with a 5-2 advantage in shots over the 20 minutes of extra time, while Valpo also earned three corner kicks in the second overtime period. But neither side could get a shot on goal, as the game ended in a draw.
"I think the building process for this group is continuing forward," said Marovich. "Tonight, I'm really proud, because we had some good performances from players who had to step up because of injuries we're dealing with. Our process all year has been next woman up, and that's been something our team's been really good at. We were good again tonight - those people stepped up and gave us good quality performances."
Valparaiso (4-2-1) plays the back end of the weekend road trip at Evansville Sunday afternoon. Live stats for the game will be available through ValpoAthletics.com.
