INDIANAPOLIS – Green Bay and Valpo grabbed key Horizon League wins while Wright State and Loyola tied on Saturday night. Cleveland State celebrated its seniors with a non-conference victory.
Green Bay 2, Youngstown State 1 (OT)
Green Bay collected an important Horizon League win, using a golden goal to best Youngstown State, 2-1, at Aldo Santaga Stadium.
Green Bay (4-8-1, 1-2-1 Horizon) and Youngstown State (6-5-0, 1-1-0 Horizon) traded first-half goals before a scoreless second half sent the teams to overtime.
Despite being outshot 13-7 in regulation, Green Bay controlled the tempo from the start of the overtime period, keeping the ball on Youngstown State's end of the field. A corner kick in the 97th minute from Chandra Eigenberger sealed the Penguins' fate, as she found Jenna Harrington for her first goal of the season. Eigenberger's kick sailed through Youngstown State's defense to the far side to Harrington, who ripped a violent header into the back of the net to end the game.
The Phoenix had opened up a 1-0 lead just six minutes into the match, when Megan Braatz found Hannah Kernen through the Penguins' defense in the sixth minute. Kernan posted her third goal of the year by going far post from 10 yards out on the right side.
In the 40th minute, the Penguins' Jade Flory weaved through the Green Bay defense for an unassisted goal, tying the game at 1-1. Flory went far post from 18 yards out, just past the outstretched arms of Green Bay goalkeeper Katy Pilarzyk into the upper corner of the net.
Both teams entered the second half looking for the go-ahead goal, with both sides getting a share of opportunities. Hekla Palmadottir opened the second half with a great shot that sailed just over the crossbar. Youngstown State's Katie Hohmann responded six minutes later by firing a shot from 20 yards out on the far side that just missed the far post. The Penguins nearly scored again off a rip from Rachel Morrison with 11 minutes to play, but the shot missed just wide.
Valparaiso 1, Detroit 0
The Valparaiso women’s soccer team picked up a crucial three points in Horizon League play, downing Detroit 1-0 at Eastgate Field on a goal in the 87th minute.
With the clock winding towards time, the game looked destined to head into an extra session until Jordyn Ryfiak finished her second match-winner of the season. Luisa Desario sent a cross into the box from the right touch line, and Ryfiak finished from the left side of the box, 10 yards out, to give Valpo the late winner.
Valparaiso (8-4-1, 2-1-0 Horizon) controlled the majority of the game, finishing the night with a shot advantage of 18-9. Both sides forced the opposing goalies to work in net, as Detroit (5-6-1, 2-2-0 Horizon) goalkeeper Nora Abolins made eight saves. Kristen Manski stopped six shots to preserve the clean sheet for Valpo’s seventh shutout of the season. Manski now owns 19 career shutouts, just one off the Crusader career record.
Wright State 0, Loyola 0 (2OT)
Loyola made 11 saves, while Wright State countered with seven saves in a 0-0 draw at Loyola Soccer Park.
Wright State (6-2-5, 1-0-2 Horizon) had 25 shots in the match, but Loyola (6-6-2, 1-1-1 Horizon) keeper Monica Gonyo stopped all 11 shots on goal. Brooke McCurdy countered with seven saves for Wright State.
Natalie Sedlock led Wright State with three shots on goal; Jessie Hubly had two on goal for the Ramblers.
Cleveland State 4, Francis Marion 1
Cleveland State scored three first half goals to rally from an early deficit and post a 4-1 win over Francis Marion on Senior Day at Krenzler Field.
Cleveland State (5-8-0) celebrated the careers of Jaime Avona, Carla Ragone, Valerie Stahl, Rachel Strongoli and Sarah Zawie on Senior Day.
The seniors played a large role in the win, led by Avona's goal and assist. Zawie added an assist, while Stahl and Ragone led CSU's back line which allowed just one early goal.
Kelly Kady gave Francis Marion a quick 1-0 lead just two minutes into the contest when she took a pass from Dominique Evans, beat her defender and sent a shot to the far post for a goal.
It did not take long for the Vikings to respond as CSU tied the match at 1-1 in the 13th minute on Shea Levi’s first goal of the season.
Zawie started the play by sending a through ball toward the goal which Levi was able to control after beating the Patriot offsides trap. Levi was able to get around the Francis Marion goalkeeper and send a shot on an open net for the tally.
The Vikings took the lead at the 31:06 mark when Avona scored her fifth goal of the season off a corner kick from Jackie Kurgan. The goal allowed Avona to move into a tie for the team lead with five goals with Vickie Havas. The duo is also tied for second in the Horizon League with five goals.
It was also Avona's second game-winning goal in as many games with both coming off corner kicks. She scored the game-winner in double overtime in Wednesday's 1-0 win over Green Bay.
The Vikings extended their lead to 3-1 in the 36th minute on Kelcey Fischer’s second goal of the season. Fischer took a pass from Avona going toward goal and beat the keeper to the left post.
Brittany Koester added her first career goal off an assist from Taylor Vidovic just eight minutes into the second half to conclude the scoring.
CSU finished with an 11-7 advantage in shots, including eight on goal. Both teams attempted three corner kicks.
Sarah Wood made two saves to earn the win, while Taylor O'Berry posted four saves for the Patriots.
