GREEN BAY, Wis. – Tournament Most Valuable Player Celeste Hoewisch scored 10 points and #1 Green Bay posted a 74-63 victory over #2 Butler in the finale of the 2011 Horizon League Women’s Basketball Championship on Sunday at the Kress Events Center.
The Phoenix, who have won a program record 31 games this season, improve to 31-1 overall and advance to their 11th NCAA Tournament in school history. The Bulldogs slip to 20-12 overall.
No. 13/11 Green Bay recorded an 89-41 win over #8 Loyola in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, setting a conference championship record for largest margin of victory with 48.The Phoenix ended #4 Wright State’s program record-tying 19 win season with an 95-65 victory in the semifinals on Friday en route to its 13th tournament championship game in school history and second under head coach Matt Bollant.
Butler tallied a 64-38 win over #7 Detroit in the quarterfinal round and 68-54 victory over #3 Cleveland State in the semifinal round en route to its second consecutive and seventh all-time tournament title appearance.
Hoewisch, a senior and 2011 Co-Player of the year, had 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting, with three rebounds and four assists against the Bulldogs.
It was a group effort win for the Phoenix with four starters scoring at least 10 points.
All tournament honoree Sarah Eichler had17 points, while All-Tournament teammates Kayla Tetschlag and Julie Wojta added 16 and13, respectively. Sophomore Adrian Ritchie also chipped in with 18.
Butler senior Brittany Bowen was named to the All-Tournament team for the Bulldogs and registered a game and career-high 34 points and also had seven rebounds and five steals.
Green Bay broke five Horizon League tournament records over the three-game event. The Phoenix broke the tournament scoring record, registering 258 points. Along with the single-game margin of victory, Green Bay also set the record for tournament margin of victory, outscoring its opponents by 89 points.
Green Bay also recorded a tourament records of 39 steals and 67 assists throughout the tournament.
Green Bay will learn its next step on Monday at 7 p.m. ET when the 64-team NCAA Tournament field is announced live on ESPN.
As the Horizon League’s No. 2 seed, the Bulldogs will receive an automatic bid to the WNIT which will be announced late Monday.
