INDIANAPOLIS – Horizon League teams took two of three non-conference road matches on Sunday afternoon, with Loyola and Valparaiso picking up victories.
Loyola 1, Indiana State 0
Loyola extended its unbeaten streak to six matches, using a goal midway through the second half to knock off Indiana State, 1-0, in Terre Haute, Ind.
After a scoreless first half, Loyola (6-4-1) was forced to hold the back line as Indiana State took four shots in the first moments of play.
Slowly, the Ramblers turned the corner, pushing the ball into the offensive third, where Samantha Welcher sent a wide ball to Moriah Schwarz, who dribbled past her defender. Schwarz sent a cross from left wing to Tricia Stonebraker in the middle, who powered a shot to the near post, giving Loyola the lead, 1-0.
Stonebraker and Schwarz continued to challenge Indiana State, adding two shots late in the game. Monica Gonyo posted her fourth shutout of the season, making four saves.
Valparaiso 1, St. Mary’s 0
Valparaiso closed its West Coast road trip on a high note, making an early goal stand up to post a 1-0 victory over St. Mary’s, in Moraga, Calif.
Valparaiso (6-3-1) put the pressure on the Gaels early in the match, earning a corner kick in the sixth minute which resulted in a header over the bar. The Crusaders’ next opportunity was all the offense it would need, as in the eighth minute, Jordyn Ryfiak finished a rebound from close range, with fellow freshman Jenny Fassbinder picking up an assist on the goal.
Kristen Manski had to make just three saves in earning her sixth clean sheet of the season, lowering her season GAA to 0.59. Manski and the Crusader defense have surrendered just one goal in the last five games. Saint Mary’s held a narrow 13-11 edge in shot attempts, but the Crusaders earned six corner kicks to the Gaels’ three.
Duquesne 2, Cleveland State 1
Cleveland State’s Vickie Havas scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season, but the Vikings dropped a 2-1 decision at Duquesne in Pittsburgh.
Cleveland State (3-7-0) fell behind 1-0 lead just 38 seconds into the match when Caroline Lacy scored. The Dukes maintained that advantage until the 81st minute when CSU managed to knot the contest at 1-1 on Havas' goal off an assist from Samantha Sarmento.
For Havas, it was her team-leading fourth goal of the season and allowed her to increase her team-leading point total to 12. She has also tallied at least one point in six of CSU's 10 matches this season.
The tie did not last long, however, as Duquesne scored the game-winner less than four minutes later when Morgan Herbert scored her fifth goal of the season off a free kick from Michelle Mooren.
The Vikings out-shot Duquesne, 8-5, while each team managed just one corner kick. CSU was whistled for 12 fouls compared to three for the Dukes.
