Loyola 1, Cleveland State 0
San Francisco 1, Valparaiso 0

INDIANAPOLIS – Loyola remained unbeaten over its last five matches, winning its Horizon League opener, while Valparaiso had the better run of play in a loss to open its West Coast swing.

Loyola 1, Cleveland State 0
Host Loyola picked up a goal in the second minute of the match and held on the rest of the way to record a 1-0 victory over Cleveland State in the Horizon League opener for both teams.

Loyola (5-4-1, 1-0-0 Horizon) extended its unbeaten streak to five matches, holding a 4-0-1 mark in that stretch. The Ramblers controlled play throughout the first half, recording nine shots and earning five corner kicks, only to see Cleveland State (3-6-0, 0-1-0 Horizon) turn the tide in the final 45 minutes.

The Vikings took nine shots in the second half, but could not push any past Loyola keeper Monica Gonyo, who recorded five saves in the win.

Brielle Haupt recorded the game-winning goal in the second minute, capitalizing on a scramble in the box to get a foot on the ball and beat CSU keeper Sarah Wood. Tricia Stonebraker picked up the assist on the goal.

San Francisco 1, Valparaiso 0
Valparaiso started its two-match California swing on Friday night by out-shooting host San Francisco 11-5, but it was the Dons who found the back of the net for the game’s lone goal, as Valpo dropped a 1-0 decision.

Valpo (5-3-1) surrendered no shots in the final 38 minutes of the first half to the Dons, and put the pressure on the home side, registering six first-half shot attempts, four of which were on frame.Rita Craven had perhaps the Crusaders’ best chance of the first half, getting behind USF’s back line, but her shot in the 20th minute was saved by Dons goalkeeper Emily Murzinski, one of four saves in the opening 45 minutes.

Trisha Wladecki had a solid opportunity for the Crusaders in the 52nd minute to break the scoreless tie, but her header at the far post was wide of the frame and the game remained scoreless. USF hit Valpo on a counter in the 74th minute for the only tally of the night, as Jaciara Mello fed Mackenzie Krieser, who put it across to the back post, where it hit the inside of the post and bounced in. The Crusaders had a pair of efforts in the final five minutes in looking for the equalizer, but could not get either chance on frame.

Valpo ended the night with an 11-5 shot advantage and put four shots on goal to USF’s two.
