Canisius 1, Detroit 0

DETROIT (9/22/2013) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team hosted a Jesuit rival on Sunday and despite some quality chances, the Titans could not get that winning goal as UDM fell to Canisius, 1-0, at Titan Field in the first game of a soccer doubleheader. Game two featured the women's squad taking on Stetson.

Junior Nathan Steinwascher made three saves in the game and appeared to be on his way to another shutout, but a handball on Detroit in the box gave the visiting Golden Griffins (3-3-1) a penalty kick opportunity, which they converted for the lone goal of the match at the 71:47 mark.

The Titans totaled eight shots on the day, including six in the second half, but UDM (0-3-4) could not get the equalizer. Detroit had two chances in the last 20 minutes off corner kicks, but was just not able to get the right look at the net.

The last 10 minutes also featured two shots from Detroit that were blocked as junior Matt Ybarra had an attempt at 80:59, while senior Adam Bedell's was at 84:28. The action then really started to get going with a pair of yellow cards handed to Detroit in the last five minutes and a yellow and a red issued to Canisius at 85:38, giving UDM a man-up opportunity for the last 4:22 of the contest.

The Titans will now get ready for Horizon League play as they host Milwaukee this Saturday, Sept. 28, at 3:00 p.m. The game will be live streamed on the Horizon League Network with a tape delay on local Comcast.

Buffalo 1, Cleveland State 0

CLEVELAND, Ohio-  The Cleveland State men's soccer team fell to Buffalo 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.

The Vikings (3-5-0) dominated most of the game, despite the loss.  The Vikings pressured the ball all 90 minutes and had chances to score, but fell short.
Buffalo's Russell Cicerone scored on a penalty kick in the second half at the 83:26 minute-mark which would be the only scoring the Bulls would need.  The Vikings had a great chance to tie the score at one with only four seconds left in the game. Cleveland State forward Alfonso Sandoval had a great look at the goal, but was blocked by Buffalo's goalkeeper Waleed Cassis as time expired.

CSU sophomore Danilo Radjen played an outstanding offensive game getting off two shots on goal and six shots overall.  Mike Derezic, Zach Ellis-Hayden, and Al James also played well on offense where they each attempted three shots.  Junior goalkeeper Joe Kalt wound up saving four shots on the afternoon for the Vikings.

The Vikings will continue the homestand at Krenzler Field, as the Vikings will face Oakland on Saturday (Sept. 28) at 7:30 p.m.  The match will be the Vikings first Horizon League conference match of the season.

Green Bay 2, NJIT 1

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay men’s soccer team used two second half goals to lift itself over NJIT, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon in its second match of the ProRehab Aces Soccer Classic, hosted by the University of Evansville.

The win improved the Phoenix to 4-2-2 on the season. Sam Krenzien (Wauwatosa, Wis.), Lawrence Talery (Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Tauren Greenidge (Bridgetown, Barbados) were named to the all-tournament team for their efforts during the weekend.

For the second-consecutive match, the Phoenix found itself in an early deficit. A Green Bay foul in the box in the 20th minute led to a penalty kick opportunity for the Highlanders, and Marko Drljic drilled the shot home for a 1-0 advantage.

Despite trailing on the scoreboard, Green Bay went into halftime with a 7-3 advantage in shots including a 4-2 edge on goal.

Tyler Swanner (Glen Carbon, Ill.) got the scoring started for Green bay in the 56th minute. Collecting a pass from Talery, Swanner took a shot from 10 yards out and snuck it inside the near post to tie the match at 1-1.

Offensive star of the weekend Krenzien kept his hot streak going netting the game-winning goal in the 65th minute. Dribbling around an NJIT defender at the top of the box, Krenzien sent a low shot past keeper David Tuchinsky to put the Phoenix up for good, 2-1.

Green Bay dominated shots, 18-7, including 9-5 on goal while also leading corners, 8-1. Krenzien, Audi Jepson (Green Bay, Wis.) and AJ Patterson (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) each had three shots for the offense. Kyle Ihn (Wales, Wis.) played all 90:00, making four saves.

The Phoenix return to the pitch on October 1, traveling to North Carolina to face UNC-Asheville.

Valparaiso 5, Western Illinois 2

Playing their seventh game on the road this season, the Crusader men traveled to Western Illinois for a Sunday afternoon matchup.  After a quick turnaround from a tough result on Friday night, the Crusaders were able to score 2 goals in the early stage of the game in what would end as a 5-2 victory over the Leathernecks.

The Crusaders wasted no time at all putting their stamp on the game.  Early in the 9th minute, Adrian Graham (Kingston, Jamaica/St. George’s College) scored his first goal as Crusader to put Valpo up 1-0.  The Jamaican center back showed great skill as he was able to find goal from 15 yards out off of a Valpo corner.  Credited with the assist were Zev Taublieb (Malibu, Calif./Agoura) and Yannick Iwunze (Paris, France/Hightower [Tex.] H.S.).  Later in the 9th minute, Nick Suker (Downers Grove, Ill./South) found himself with just the opposing goalkeeper to beat as the Crusaders were able to turn the Leathernecks over in their own defensive third.  Suker would beat the goalkeeper and score his third goal of the season, putting the Crusaders up 2-0 in less than 10 minutes of the match.

"We challenged the guys this morning to deliver an appropriate response to a difficult game Friday night, and I think 2 goals in nine minutes was a great response,” said head coach Mike Avery.

Western Illinois was able to cut the lead in half early in the second half on a goal from Husref Jupic.  However, Valpo would respond in 61st minute as Taublieb was able to play Charles Barden (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Linn-Mar), whose well-timed run put him in on goal.  Barden would finish the chance and put the Crusaders up 3-1.  The Leathernecks would again cut the lead to just one with a goal in the 68th minute, but the day belonged to the Crusaders.
A good spell of possession from the Crusaders led to Suker finding himself with enough space to hit a shot on goal.  Suker’s chance would be blocked by the goalkeeper, but the rebound would fall to Barden who buried the ball into the back of the net to score his second of the game and third of the season to put the Crusaders up 4-2.

"Over the course of the game we were a little ragged, but with the quick turnaround and travel, I think that is somewhat expected,” said Avery.  “Our mistakes gave them some life, but we answered again to close out the game. In all, I'm very proud of the team. They showed great character today."

The Crusaders would add another goal in the 87th minute to put the game well out of reach at 5-2.  Quality possession from the Crusaders would again lead to a goal as Jordan Aidoud (Lyon, France/CEFAM) scored his first goal of the season off of a great combination play with Barden inside the Leatherneck penalty area.

"To be 3-1-3 at this point, with six of those seven games on the road, is a great accomplishment,” said Avery. “As we turn toward league play, we have some confidence, but we also know that every game in the Horizon League is a battle. Saturday at wright state will be a difficult game but we are very excited for the next phase of the season."

Valparaiso (3-1-3, 0-0-1 Horizon) will travel to Dayton, Ohio next for Saturday and Monday night fixtures.  Saturday night, the Crusaders play their second league game of the season at Wright State (1-3-1, 0-0-0 Horizon).  Valpo will then stay in Dayton, as the team will take on the University of Dayton (7-0-0) for a Monday night match.  Live stats for both games will be available through ValpoAthletics.com.

Milwaukee 2, Western Michigan 0

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Junior Rami Younes scored one goal and assisted the other and freshman goalkeeper Liam Anderson posted his third straight shutout to give the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's soccer team a 2-0 victory over Western Michigan University Sunday at the WMU Soccer Complex.

The Panthers (6-0-1) scored first and led at halftime for the seventh game in a row, topping the Broncos (3-5-0) to remain one of 15 unbeaten teams left at the NCAA Division I level this season.

"We are pretty pleased with that and excited about our performance today from start to finish," UWM head coach Kris Kelderman said. "Defensively, we were very solid and that starts with the goalkeeping and the back line. Our team defense was very good today and we created some nice chances - could have had some other goals but overall, a very good performance."

The victory was Milwaukee's third-straight road win, marking the first time it has accomplished that feat in six years. The third shutout in a row also marked the longest stretch of scoreless defense since the team recorded five in a row at the end of the 2005 campaign.

At 6-0-1, UWM has one of the top winning percentages in the country, with only a trio of 7-0 teams ahead of it on the list.

Younes netted the eventual game-winner in the 12th minute, rocketing a 20-yard shot over the WMU goalkeeper's head. It hit the cross bar and caromed straight down, with play continuing briefly before the referee's gathered and called it a goal.

"We're getting off to good starts and we just have to keep that going," Kelderman said. "We have to get the second goal a little quicker than we have been, but pretty pleased with today's effort."

It stayed that way until much later, when junior Laurie Bell volleyed home his fourth goal of the campaign at the 57:41 mark.

Freshman Junior Juarez created the opportunity, picking up a loose ball in the attacking third and sending it forward to Younes. Younes set up Bell with a well-placed cross to make it 2-0.

Milwaukee ended with a 14-to-8 edge in shots, narrowly missing a couple of other quality scoring chances. Bell found freshman Kostas Kotselas for a header just before intermission, but the ball flew just wide. Bell came close himself in the 28th minute, volleying a cross from senior Robbie Boyd along the end line narrowly over the cross bar.

The Panthers also missed an extremely early goal when a short shot from sophomore Aaron Horvat went just wide in the first 30 seconds after a combination of passes from Bell and Boyd.

The defense did a solid job again today, with Anderson needing to make just a routine save in the 67th-minute to keep the zero on the scoreboard.
The Panthers will not play midweek, waiting until the weekend to begin Horizon League play. Milwaukee heads to Detroit Saturday, set for a start time of 2 p.m. CST.

UIC 2, IPFW 0

CHICAGO – The UIC men’s soccer team collected its fifth-consecutive win and fourth-straight shutout Sunday on the final day of the UIC Soccer Classic at Flames Field.  The Flames defeated IPFW, 4-0, to claim first place at the tournament, while senior Bob Novak, junior Jesus Torres, redshirt-sophomore Thomas Villamil and freshman Andrew Putna were named to the All-Tournament team.

After winning its last five matches, UIC improves its record to 5-2-0 this season, as IPFW drops to 0-7-1.  Having played seven games this season, the Flames’ 5-2-0 mark is the best start to the season since the 2006 campaign, when the team started with a 5-0-2 record.

"It's great to get another win in front of our fans," head coach Sean Phillips said.  "This weekend, we showed we were able to grind out a tough 1-0 result against Gonzaga and we were still able to get a shutout at 4-0 against IPFW and keep a clean sheet.  The mistakes are getting fewer and fewer, and the positive play is getting more and more."

UIC had a strong offensive output from the start of the match.  The first shot of the game for the Flames at 9:23 resulted in a goal by Torres off an assist from senior Slobodan Aleksov.  Less than six minutes later, Novak started up the play with a pass to Torres, who connected with sophomore Kyle Lindberg for UIC’s second goal.  The Flames finished the half with five additional shots, one on goal shot by Torres that was saved by IPFW’s redshirt-freshman goalkeeper Raphael Kotzock.

The Flames did not slow down heading into the second half, as Torres scored his second goal of the game in the 70th minute off of a Novak assist, and redshirt-freshman Alex Yeung collected his first goal as a Flame in the 81st minute.  UIC added eight more shots in the half, while 10 different players made attempts throughout the game.

"We've been getting a lot from our wing players, just getting in from behind and out-running guys, and today we were able to pick up goals number two and three on quick restarts, which can add some variety to that attack," added Phillips.  "I have a feeling our team, as the season goes on, is going to pick those up more and more."

UIC held IPFW to just two shots during the match, one in each half, while Putna did not need to make a save and improved his GAA to 0.86.

"We seem to be eliminating some of the silly goals we were giving away early in the year," Phillips said.  "Now, hopefully, that's allowing us to continue to develop into a stronger defensive unit and a unit that's more difficult to play against.  With two hard non-conference games left and then conference play, we want to be playing our best in all aspects of the game."

Next up for the Flames is a 7 p.m. CT match Saturday against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville at Korte Stadium in Edwardsville, Ill.
