DETROIT -- After dropping six straight matches, the Milwaukee women’s soccer team had its backs up against the wall. Displaying the mettle that carried the program to the top of the Horizon League, the Panthers came away with a 2-0 victory over Detroit Thursday afternoon at Titan Field.

Milwaukee (2-6-1, 1-1-0 Horizon) took a potentially key tie-breaker in the highly anticipated matchup of the Horizon League co-favorites.

Kelly Lewers and Krissy Dorre set up both goals, with Lewers notching the game-winning tally and assisting on the second of the match. Dorre sprung Lewers with a one-touch through ball. Lewers made a long run and inside the box, slotted a slot to the keeper's left and into the goal in the 18th minute.

After halftime, Milwaukee was on the attack for the first five minutes almost continuously, coming away with an insurance score. Again, it was Dorre playing the ball from the midfield to Lewers, who slotted it behind the defender to Kelsey Holbert, who finished for an important insurance tally in the 50th minute.

After the Panthers’ first goal, Detroit fought forward for an equalizer. The Panthers were able to maintain the pressure and much of the rest of the half was played in the midfield. The Titans did forge a 9-3 shot advantage, but did not create much danger.

In the second half, UWM was once again the aggressors on the attack early, but was put a bit on its heels after scoring. The Panther defense did well to turn away each Titan attack, while pushing the ball forward for the offense to counter. Nora Abolins made a pair of strong saves for Detroit down the stretch to keep the team in the game.

Jamie Forbes stopped nine shots in the game and got assistance from a team save by Emily Scott. Abolins finished with four saves on the day.

Thanks to an openly-played second half, the shots finished at 22-13 in favor of Detroit for the game. There were also 17 corner kicks in the game, 10 for the home team and seven for Milwaukee.
