Women's Soccer Scoreboard (Sept. 24)
Detroit 2, Cleveland State 1 (OT)
Milwaukee 4, UIC 1
Valparaiso 3, Oakland 0
Wright State 1, Youngstown State 1 (2OT)
Detroit 2, Cleveland State 1 (OT)
Junior midfielder Jennifer Borawski scored 2:14 into overtime Wednesday to lift the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Cleveland State at Titan Field in both team's Horizon League opener.
With the win, Detroit improved to 3-4-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference. The victory was also Detroit's second straight as the Titans were playing their first game in nine days.
Borawski's golden goal was her first score of the season. Even though the Titans were playing a player down after receiving a red card in the 86th minute, Borawski (Northville, Mich. / Northville) found a seam down the right sideline in overtime. She drove past defenders and into the box and fired a shot to the left side of the goal, past a diving CSU goalkeeper, and into the back of the net.
"You have to give the girls credit," UDM head coach Mike Lupenec said. "They believed in themselves going into overtime and that's tough when you give up a goal late. Some teams might have folded. We kept the positive attitude. We told (Borawski) that she needs to be aggressive and has to be the goal scorer for us. That's why she scored. She was aggressive. You just have to give the girls credit. They found a way to win.
"In the Horizon League, it's going to be about scrapping to get goals and that's how you win games. And with a man down, your percentages to win go down. But we came out in overtime and we were the better team."
Neither team could take advantage of many offensive opportunities early in the first half. Detroit got on the scoreboard first after making good on a penalty kick opportunity with 10 minutes remaining in the first half.
Junior defender Alyssa Lotito (Macomb, Mich. / Eisenhower) knocked in the penalty kick, Detroit's first of the season, to give the Titans a 1-0 lead heading into halftime. It was Lotito's first goal of the season.
The Vikings increased their offensive pressure in the second half, out-shooting the Titans 9-1 and earning five corner kick chances. CSU got on the board with just 2:12 remaining in the contest after Sabrina Abram threw in a ball into the box, which was corralled by Kaila Sargema, who knocked it past Detroit goalkeeper Marina Manzo (Washington Twp., Mich. / Romeo) to tie the game.
The momentum had seemed to swing in Cleveland State's favor, but Borawski had other ideas for overtime and clinched the victory with her golden goal.
Cleveland State held the shot advantage for the game, 12-6. CSU also had six shots on goal compared to four shots on net for the Titans. Lotito led the Titans with two shots overall, and Manzo made five saves in net for the Titans.
The Titans did allow their first goal in 14 games at home. Cleveland State's goal in the 88th minute snapped Detroit's 13-game shutout streak at Titan Field that stretched back into the 2012 season. Detroit, however, improved its unbeaten streak at home to 14 games. UDM is 13-0-1 in its last 14 games in the Motor City.
Milwaukee 4, UIC 1
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee blasted home four goals by three different players in a 4-1 victory over UIC Wednesday night at Engelmann Stadium.
Krissy Dorre scored her first of two goals on the night in the 14th minute to open up the scoring. Dorre's second came in the 46th, while freshmen Sydney Senn and Cassidy Blanchard also found the back of the net.
Paige Lincicum had another strong night in the net, registering eight saves.
Milwaukee (4-6-0, 1-0-0 Horizon) dominated the game from start to finish; blasting 21 shots on the night that saw 20 players earn double-digit minutes.
UIC falls to 1-9-0 and 0-1-0 in league play.
"This is a good start. I'm glad with some of the adjustments our players made in the second half," Milwaukee head coach Greg Henschel said. "I thought our play in the first half was not very sharp, but I'm pleased to see some of the adjustments we made in the second half, which ultimately led to better scoring chances and one of the goals. We've got work to do and things need to get a little cleaner, but this is a good start."
For the fourth time in the last five games, Milwaukee scored in the game's opening minutes when Dorre netted her third of the season at the 13:51 mark. The senior forward collected the ball near midfield and played a give-and-go with classmate Kelly Lewers, finishing the return feed far post for the early 1-0 lead.
UWM continued the attack, firing off shot after shot. Kelly Manski and Caity Bestwina both had great looks from inside the box but both cracks went just over the bar.
Then, just a short time after checking into the game, Senn doubled the Panther lead just before the half. The freshman gave it a rip from just inside the 18-yard box. The Flames' keeper appeared to initially make the save but the blast had too much on it as the ball bounced off her fingers and found the back of the net to make it 2-0 in the 41st minute.
Milwaukee then made it 3-0 just after the break on another goal from Dorre. Lewers again started the play, taking a feed and going toward the endline, where she took a few touches before slotted the ball perfectly to Dorre, who finished from close range just 42 seconds into the second half.
Blanchard then continued the rout for Milwaukee by scoring the first goal of her collegiate career in the 58th minute. Maria Stephans sent a corner curling into the box and Blanchard towered over the crowd of defender and headed the ball to make it 4-0 at the 57:48 mark.
UIC was able to bring one back on Haley Kittle's first of the season in the 81st minute but it was too little, too late for the Flames as Milwaukee dominated in seemingly every facet of the game.
The Panthers out shot the Flames, 21-13, and had a 7-2 edge in corners. UWM was whistled for 19 fouls to UIC's 12.
Valparaiso 3, Oakland 0
The Valparaiso women’s soccer team matched a program record for the longest unbeaten streak in program history, but more importantly earned three points in its first Horizon League match of the year as the Crusaders defeated Oakland Wednesday night, 3-0, at Brown Field.
The victory on Wednesday was the eighth straight result the Crusaders have earned, matching a stretch of eight consecutive matches in the middle of the 2006 campaign. This is also just the second time in program history Valpo has suffered just one defeat in its first nine matches of the year, joining the 2008 season.
“I thought our team executed extremely well tonight, and that we were real quality in the first 45 minutes,” said Crusader head coach John Marovich. “We were efficient with our chances in the first half, putting six of our eight shots on goal and scoring three goals, and I thought that was the result of a quality execution of our tactics.”
The impetus for the victory Wednesday night was junior Rita Craven (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way North). Craven found the back of the net twice for her first career multi-goal match and now owns a team-best four goals on the season. Her first goal ended up being the match-winning tally, the sixth game-winning goal of her career, which ties her for fifth-most in Crusader history. In addition, Craven has three match-winners this season, just one off of Valpo’s single-season record.
The Crusaders entered the match with just two first-half goals on the season, but would make quick work of the Golden Grizzlies, scoring all three of their goals in the opening 45 minutes, including two in the first 20 minutes. The opener came in the 11th minute, as senior Kaylee Draper (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) took a free kick from 35 yards out. Draper sent it into the box, where sophomore Kat Anesini (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) brought it down and took a shot on goal. Anesini’s shot was saved by Oakland goalkeeper Stephanie Bukovec, but the rebound went to Craven at the far post, who tucked it away for the eventual match-winner.
Then, Valpo grabbed an insurance tally with a superb individual strike from sophomore April Cronin (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) in the 20th minute. An attempted clearance out of their own end from the Golden Grizzlies was intercepted by Cronin, about 25 yards from goal. The sophomore took one step and unleashed a cracker of a shot, a golazo which rifled into the right-hand side of the net and left Bukovec no chance to react as Cronin put the Crusaders ahead 2-0.
The final goal would come for the Crusaders in the 38th minute. Anesini was on the run with the ball in the middle of the box when she was taken down by an Oakland defender. The referee immediately pointed to the spot, and Craven stepped up to take the first penalty attempt of her career. The junior calmly drove the ball to her right, easily beating Bukovec and making it 3-0 Valpo.
The Crusaders’ dominance in the opening 45 minutes was borne out by the numbers, as Valpo attempted eight first-half shots – six of which were on goal – while surrendering just one to the Golden Grizzlies. With Oakland pushing people forward in the second half, it registered seven second-half shots, three of which were on goal and all saved by Sydney Galvez-Daley (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick [Creighton]) to cap a four-save performance in the shutout, her sixth clean sheet of the year. Valpo recorded ten second-half shots as well, out-shooting Oakland for the game 18-8.
“Obviously it was a great game from Rita, scoring twice – I also thought Kaylee’s service was quite good tonight, and that Kat did an excellent job at center forward in her movement,” said Marovich. “I thought the back line did a very nice job killing off the game against quality opposition. This is a really nice win over an Oakland side that has a lot of quality in its team, and to get a result like tonight’s is a great start to the league season.”
Wright State 1, Youngstown State 1 (2OT)
Freshman Abby Kenski scored her second goal of the season and the Youngstown State women's soccer team salvaged a 1-1 double-overtime tie against Horizon League foe Wright State on Wednesday evening at Farmers National Bank Field.
The Penguins move to 4-4-2 overall and 0-0-1 in the Horizon League while the Raiders are 3-6-1 overall and 0-0-1 in the league.
Trailing 1-0, Kenski found a loose ball in the box and lofted a shot into the left corner of the goal to tie the match at the 66:06 mark. Senior Chelsey Haney was credited with the assist on the play.
Wright State took an early 1-0 lead when Natalie Sedlock dribbled down the right side of the field and ripped a shot into the left corner at the 12:10 mark.
The Penguins were more aggressive after halftime recording nine shots, including six in the second half and three in the second overtime. Overall, the Raiders outshot the Penguins, 16-14.
In the 106th minute, junior Katie Hohmann laced a shot over the goal, and freshman Katie Hackos nearly missed a game-winning goal in the 107th minute after her shot sailed just high.
Senior goalkeeper Jackie Podolsky recorded three saves and senior Cara Armstrong led the Penguins with four shots.
