The second weekend of the women’s college basketball season began with Horizon League teams Green Bay and UIC picking up victories to move to 3-0 on the season.
#23 Green Bay 84, Eastern Michigan 53
Green Bay extended its regular season winning streak to 23 games, tied for second longest in school history, with Friday’s night 31 point win over the Eagles.
The Phoenix broke open the game early with a 15-0 run to take a 22-6 lead and extended the lead to 50-22 at halftime. Preseason Horizon League First-Team member Julie Wojta had 20 points in the first half and Adrian Ritchie knocked down four three-pointers in the opening half as the Phoenix shot 51 percent from the field.
Wotja finished the game with a team-high 23 points to pace four Phoenix players in double figures. Green Bay finished the game shooting 47 percent from the field, 52 percent from beyond the arc and 91 percent from the free throw line.
UIC 68, St. Louis 60
Senior forward Jasmine Bailey tied her career-high with 30 points while also pulling down 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season as UIC took down St. Louis, 68-60.
The Flames battled back from an early deficit as they fell behind 20-13 after St. Louis made nine of its first 12 field goal attempts. UIC battled back with an 11-0 run to tie the score at 28 at halftime.
The second half was a different story as UIC shot 57.9 percent from the field and limited St. Louis to just 23.1 percent shooting.
Sophomore Katie Hannemann set career-highs in points (12) and rebounds (10) for the Flames in the win, while Kiara Strickland fell one point short of her career-high with 16 points.
Drake 63, Milwaukee 51
Drake got off to a fast start, scoring 14 of the first 16 points of the game, and the Panthers were never able to recover in Friday night’s 63-51 loss to the Bulldogs.
Milwaukee trailed 24-9 midway through the first half, but battled back to cut the lead to eight, 30-22, at halftime. Drake, though, regained their double-digit lead early in the second half and the Panthers were never able to mount a comeback.
Sami Tucker and Kiki Wilson each scored 12 points to lead the Panthers.
Drexel 61, Detroit 56
The Titans battled back from a 16-point second half deficit to get within three points, but could not come all the way back as Drexel knocked off Detroit 61-56 in Preseason WNIT action at Akron, Ohio.
Junior Chanahi Putham scored 11 of her 13 points in the second half to help lead the Titans back. Freshman Shareta Brown had a game-high 16 points and nine rebounds.
