The Wright State women’s basketball team was victorious in its first road of the game season Tuesday night as the Raiders defeated Sun Belt foe Western Kentucky, 86-66, to move to 3-0 on the season.
Detroit, Milwaukee and Valparaiso were also in action Tuesday night, but could not pull out victories.
Wright State 86, Western Kentucky 66
The Raiders found themselves in a 37-29 hole at intermission in their first road game of the season, but WSU came out firing in the second half, outscoring Western Kentucky 57-29 in the period to win the game going away.
Freshman Kim Demmings, who two weeks ago was named Horizon League Player of the Week, had a team-high 25 points, tying her career-high she set in her collegiate debut against Ball State. The Richmond, Ind., native was 9-16 from the field and also had a team-high three steals and tied for team high honors with four assists.
Courtney Boyd chipped in 17 points for WSU and Shaunda Sandifer had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Raiders return to action Saturday when they travel to Columbia, Mo., to face Big 12 opponent, Missouri.
Bowling Green 57, Detroit 49
The Titans outrebounded Bowling Green 56-31, including a 24-8 edge on the offensive glass, but Bowling Green scored the final 10 points of the game to defeat Detroit in the first women’s basketball contest played on the new Dick Vitale Court at Calihan Hall.
Freshman Shareta Brown had her third career double-double, scoring 16 points and pulling down a career-high 18 rebounds, junior Chanahl Putnam scored 10 points, and junior Yar Shayok had six points, 13 rebounds and three blocked shots for the Titans.
Detroit held the defending MAC Champions to just 31.5 percent shooting, but shot just 27.7 themselves. The Titans are back in action this weekend as they participate in the Texas-San Antonio Thanksgiving Classic. Detroit will face Utah out of the Pac-12 on Friday and host UTSA on Saturday. Game time for both days is set for 6:00 p.m. (EST) at the Convocation Center.
Western Illinois 67, Valparaiso 55
The Crusaders took an eight-point lead into halftime against Western Illinois, but the Leathernecks started the second half on a 17-2 run and never relinquished the lead in keeping Valparaiso from its first win of the season.
Gina Lange led Valpo with 16 points on 6-14 shooting, while also grabbing seven rebounds. Mallory Ladd was the only other Crusader in double-figures with 11 points. Ashley Varner finished just shy of a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds.
Valparaiso is next in action this weekend in Boulder, Colorado when it participates in the Omni Hotels Classic hosted by the University of Colorado.
Michigan State 70, Milwaukee 57
Milwaukee shot only 30.8 percent in the first half to fall behind by 11 at halftime and despite playing Michigan State even in the second half could never recover. The loss dropped the Panthers record to 0-3 as Milwaukee has played a tough opening schedule, hosting two Big 10 opponents and playing on the road at Drake, a Missouri Valley school.
Sami Tucker led three Panthers in double-figures with 15 points. Tucker was 7-12 from the field and also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Angela Rodriguez (13) and Courtney Lindfors (12) also scored in double figures.
Milwaukee shot 50 percent from the field in the second half and outscored Michigan State in the paint, but MSU’s 32-2 advantage in points off the bench was the difference for the Spartans.
The Panthers play at Western Illinois on Saturday.
