INDIANAPOLIS -- Green Bay seniors Kayla Tetschlag and Celeste Hoewisch have been named Co-Players of the Year, highlighting the Horizon League's 2010-11 Women's Basketball All-League Teams and specialty award winners.
Hoewisch has also been selected as Co-Defensive Player of the Year with Cleveland State senior Shawnita Garland, while Butler senior Alyssa Pittman earns Sixth Player of the Year accolades, Milwaukee freshman Angela Rodriguez earns Newcomer of the Year honors and Green Bay’s Matt Bollant picks up Coach of the Year laurels.
Hoewisch, a guard from Hortonville, Wis., is leading the league in three-point field goal percentage (.431) and ranks among the League leaders in steals (3rd, 2.6), assists (9th, 3.3), free throw percentage (5th, .809) and field-goal percentage (8th, .477).
Tetschlag, a forward from Sheboygan, Wis., places among the conference leaders in field goal percentage (3rd, .505), steals (5th, 2.4), free throw percentage (6th, .800) and rebounding (9th, 7.5).
Green Bay has clinched at least a share of the League's regular-season crown in each of the past 13 campaigns, which marks the nation's longest active streak. The Phoenix has also guaranteed itself a 34th consecutive winning season, dating back to 1977-78.
Garland, a guard from Charleston, W. Va., is leading the league in steals with 2.9 per game and ranks among the conference leaders in scoring (5th, 16.1), assists (7th, 3.5), and is tenth in the league in free throw percentage (.767) and three point field goals, averaging 1.7 per contest.
Pittman, a guard/forward from Elkhart, Ind., ranks eighth in the league in free throw percentage (.793), steals (2.0) and three-point field goals made (1.9).
Rodriguez, a guard from Oak Creek, Wis., places among league leaders in three point field goal percentage (2nd, .421), free throw percentage (4th, .857) and three point field goals made (6th, 2.2).
Bollant picks up the League's top coaching honor after guiding Green Bay to an undefeated conference season and aprogram-record 29 wins in 30 games. The Phoenix are 29-1 overall and 18-0 in conference play.
This is the third time Bollant has earned the accolade in his four years with Green Bay.
Hoewisch, Tetschlag and Garland are joined on the All-League First Team by Milwaukee senior Lindsay Laur and Wright State senior LaShawna Thomas.
Laur, a forward from Roseville, Minn., ranks among the circuit leaders in free throw percentage (1st, .926) scoring (3rd, 17.3) and rebounding (3rd, 9.3).Thomas, a guard from Columbus, Ohio, is leading the league in assists, with 5.7 per game and second in scoring, making 18.5 points per contest.
Green Bay is also represented on the All-League Second Team in junior Julie Wojta, along with Butler seniors Chloe Hamilton and Brittany Bowen, Wright State junior Molly Fox and Youngstown State sophomore Brandi Brown.
Brown is the leading scorer in the Horizon League, averaging 20.0 points per game and was a member of the 2010 All-Newcomer team in her freshman campaign.
Rodriguez is joined on the All-Newcomer Team by Detroit sophomore Dominique Dixon, Wright State senior Shaunda Sandifer and freshmen Tabitha Geradot of Valparaiso and Courtney Lindfors of Milwaukee.
Hoewisch and Garland are joined on the All-Defensive Team by Tetschlag, UIC redshirt senior Briana Hinkle and Detroit sophomore Yar Shayok, the 2010 Newcomer of the Year.
The award winners were chosen by Horizon League head coaches, sports information directors and select media.
The Speedway Horizon League Championship begins on Monday with two first-round games -- #10 Valparaiso at #7 Detroit (7 p.m. ET) and #9 Youngstown State at #8 Loyola (8 p.m.).
Wednesday's schedule includes four quarterfinal contests -- #5 Milwaukee at #4 Wright State (7 p.m.), #6 UIC at #3 Cleveland State (7 p.m.), the #7/10 winner at #2 Butler (7 p.m.) and the 8/9 winner at #1 Green Bay (8 p.m.).
Friday's semifinals and Sunday's championship will be hosted by the highest remaining seed after the quarterfinals. The tournament finale will be televised live by ESPNU at 1 p.m.
