INDIANAPOLIS – Eight schools will compete in the 2011 Horizon League Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday, May 6 through Sunday, May 8. The 14th annual event will take place at the IUPUI Michael A. Carroll Track Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind., hosted by Butler University.

Milwaukee claimed both the men’s and women’s titles last year, with the men claiming its seventh consecutive title, and the women winning their first championship since 2007. The Milwaukee men claimed all of the specialty awards, including lone senior, Tyler Bucholz, the 2010 Outstanding Runner.

Key competitors returning for the Panthers include the 2010 Outstanding Field Performer, Matt Jensen and the 2010 decathlon winner and Field Newcomer of the Year, Dan Simon. Newcomer, Scott Erickson is currently leading the League in the discus, and looks to help Milwaukee to its eighth straight championship title.

On the women’s side, Samia Taylor, the 2010 Field Newcomer of the Year is returning for the Panthers, along with senior, Erin Havener, the current League leader in the pole vault. Also returning for the Panthers is Shelby Schaal, the current League leader in the heptathlon.

Youngstown State women look to reclaim the title in 2011 with League leaders in nine out of the 22 events. Returning for the Penguins are senior, Alisha Anthony, juniors Melanie Prelac and Alison Roth and sophomores Kaitlyn Griffith and Samantha Hamilton. Key freshman that have impacted Youngstown State are Ciara Jarrett, ranked first in both the 100 meter and 200m and Katrina Rettburg, League leader in the high jump.

Other specialty award winners returning are Butler sophomores Kirsty Legg, 2010 Running Newcomer of the Year and Lauren McKillp, 2010 Horizon League Women’s Outstanding Runner.

On Friday, events will begin at 2pm(EST) beginning with the decathlon and heptathlon, followed by the men’s discus at 3:30pm and the women’s discus at 6pm. Fridays competition will end with the 10,000 meter run beginning at 8pm for the men and 8:45pm for the women.
