Titans Fall To Western Michigan In Saturday Matinee-- Box Score
DETROIT (12/20/2014) -- Playing shorthanded in its last home game of 2014, the University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team fell to Western Michigan, 71-57, on Saturday afternoon in historic Calihan Hall.
Prior to the game, Detroit retired No. 44 in honor of former standout and All-American Cheryl Williams-Miller and at halftime, the Titans recognized all their former players on Alumni Day.
Freshman Darianne Seward led the way with a season-tying 19 points and a season best eight eight rebounds. Redshirt sophomore Rosanna Reynolds tallied 13 points and sophomore Haleigh Ristovski and freshman Brianne Cohen added six points apiece. Read more
Women Rout UC Irvine at BTI Invitational-- Box Score
The Wright State women's basketball team closed out the first half with a 27-11 run and then outscored UC Irvine 39-17 in the second half in rolling to an 80-42 decision over the Anteaters Saturday afternoon at the BTI Invitational in West Lafayette, Indiana.
The Raiders scored the first seven points of the game, only to see UC Irvine answer with a 12-4 run to take its first lead of the contest at 12-11 with 12 minutes remaining in the first half. A Tay'ler Mingo jumper and a Ciara Patterson three put WSU in front for good at 19-14 and a later Breanna Stucke three pushed the margin into double figures at 28-16.
Wright State maintained a double-digit advantage the rest of the period and led 41-25 at the break as Mingo connected on a jumper just ahead of the buzzer. Read more
Oakland Drops First Home Game to Indiana, 88-61-- Box Score
ROCHESTER, Mich. - Elena Popkey scored 19 points and Olivia Nash added 12 with eight rebounds as Oakland dropped its first home game of the season to Indiana, 88-61, Saturday afternoon at the Athletics Center O'rena. The Golden Grizzlies finish the non-conference home schedule with a 4-1 record.
Popkey's 19 points is a season-high as she also set season-highs in field goals and 3-point field goals. Nash has scored in double-figures in eight out of Oakland's 10 games this season, while Sinclair Russell recorded a career-high four blocks to go along with nine points.
The Golden Grizzlies trailed 46-29 at the half as both teams shot over 48 percent from the floor. Popkey scored 12 of her 19 points in the period on 5-of-7 shooting. IU used a 13-0 run early in the game to take a 19-6 advantage. Read more
Green Bay Downs Vermont 60-40 to Win Fourth Straight-- Box Score
GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Winning its fourth consecutive game in a row despite another cold shooting performance, the Green Bay women’s basketball team defeated Vermont 60-40 on Saturday afternoon at the Kress Center.
Green Bay (9-2) had another tough shooting effort at home, finishing the game with a 32.3 percent (21-65) field goal percentage a game after shooting 35.1 percent against Wisconsin. The Phoenix defense held its opponents to under 50 points for the second consecutive game and under 40 percent shooting for the seventh game this season.
The Phoenix, which improved its perfect home record to 4-0, received 32 points from its bench thanks to Sam Terry’s game-high 17 points and Allie LeClaire’s 13. Terry and LeClaire combined to go 5-for-9 from three-point land, while the rest of the team went 0-for-11. Read more
Career Days Don't Cut It for Crusader Women-- Box Score
Anne Hamilton (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) had the half of her life, Jessica Carr (Arcadia, Ind./Hamilton Heights) finished with career highs in points and rebounds, but it wasn't enough as SIU-Edwardsville turned a four-point halftime deficit into a 77-65 victory over Valparaiso at the Vadalabene Center on Saturday afternoon.
The start of the game was pushed back a little more than twenty minutes as a campus-wide power outage left those in attendance in the dark. Hamilton, who received her first start of the season, had her own lights-out display from the field. She connected on four of her first five attempts from three-point range as she poured in 16 first-half points.
The Crusaders were in control for the majority of the first half, but failed to advance their lead past eight points. On five separate occasions, the Brown and Gold led by eight. Read more
UIC Falls to No. 20/21 Mississippi State, 73-36-- Box Score
LAS VEGAS – The UIC women’s basketball team (8-2) opened the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic with a 73-36 loss to No. 20/21 Mississippi State (13-0) Saturday night. The Flames held their eighth opponent to less than 40 percent shooting but the Bulldogs never trailed and matched their fewest points allowed this season.
Redshirt junior Ruvanna Campbell, who ranks second nationally in rebounds per game, picked up her fourth straight double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds. Campbell’s double-double was her eighth this season and the 34th in her UIC career.
Campbell had nine offensive rebounds and has corralled 19 offensive rebounds over the last two contests. She moved into tenth in program history with 590 career rebounds. Campbell also recorded two blocks and now ranks eighth in program history with 74 career blocks. Read more
